My neighbor's father recently passed away and his father passed down to him a Walther P38 that the father got in Germany during WWII.It was taken off a German Officer.

1)The serial number is 2188,marked on slide and frame.
2)A marking on slide, BYF 43.
3)A eagal(?)with the number 135 also on the slide.
4)Has the original flap holster with the spare magazine on the front.
5)The pistol is in very good condition.

Would someone out there have a ballpark figure what the value of this pistol is or direct me to someone who could?
My neighbor does not want to part with it and he is wanting to pass it down to his son.

Thanks so much
Paul

I Think prices on war p-38's have gone down some lately. There's a recent influx of russian one's (stockpiled) com'in in. Also Ex german army P-1's are grabbin some of the market. I'd take a WAG at about $5-600. Just my guess; I do however have pretty good colection of walthers so it's not completely uneducated. Personally, I'd try to convince him to hang on to it.:)

Walther was the developer and first producer of the P.38, but "byf" is actually Mauser. The "43" is the year of manufacture. Unless the gun is in absolutely perfect condition, the $500-600 price range is about right. You could probably add around $50 or more for the holster depending on condition.
