They did it in Ohio!
I wear open to gunshows (unloaded)
it is legal to carry an unloaded gun in public ,why not do this in Sac or SF?
We have quite alot of gun owners in CA if we can get a third to show up
it would be a huge crowd.

Sure, it's legal, but expect to get hassled - as I was, upon leaving a gun show in Culver City with a newly-acquired long gun. This was some years ago, when private parety transfers were okay.

I was stopped by an officer in a cruiser, and the usual crowd of LEOs arrived to observe the situation. The officer relieved me of the gun and asked a lot of questions, including how much I paid for the weapon; I didn't answer that one.

After running the S/N of the weapon, he let me go, with the conflicting advice that I should transport the weapon in a case - but that would be a concealed firearm, etc, etc.

There has never been a gun show in Culver City since then. Many show attendees were accosted for assorted reasons - an unpleasant experience for all who were treated as though they were criminals.

AFAIK Open carry is NOT legal in CA in any county with more than 200,000 people and only in counties with under 200,000 people with an exposed carry permit.

You MAY be able to do it with unloaded guns, but then it still might be brandishing.

Texas awaits...

all the time.
the cops just smile!
I am suggesting this as a means of protesting dumb gun laws and as a means of putting CCW on the table.

Last I heard (from a Cali-boy who practiced this), unloaded open-carry is legal. But you may not have any ammo for that gun on you.

The guy and his brother would carry different guns (1911 and a .357 revolver) and swap mags and speed loaders.

They really looked forward to the police contact as it just p|ssed them off.

Do your research.

I gotta ask though, what good might it do? So a bunch of the liberals see us openly carrying unloaded guns. Will they make the connection that that means we want more concealed carry? Will it even make the news? When it does will the media be fair and report our concerns and make us look good or will they slander the whole event and will most Californians lose any interest they had or not care at all?

Now if it were well laid out and you were able to get legislation introduced at the same time, it might be pretty powerful. You know, have a rally and if you could get a really big showing, introduce legislation that would make our CCW laws better. If you could get a couple hundred thousand gun owners all to show up with pistols on their sides, that might attract attention from the assembly and senate. The key would to thoroughly brief everyone before hand and make sure no knucklheads don't throw their magazine in their pocket. Or heck, if we were able to get enough people, just have everyone carry loaded. Lets see the Sacremento or whoever police arrest anything over 1000 people. Or plan it in a nice town like Bakersfield where the police might not even bother.

Good luck organizing it.

My father told me about the gun culture in California before Ronnie Raygun. What a place!

Go get it back!

Good comments, El Rojo!

Yes, even a few hundred gun toters will get a lot of intebtion; and a few calls to the media before the event will likely get quite a bit of media coverage. If anyone wants to organize the event, I'll be there - with my Government Model proudly displayed!

Gunsmith- since we share a city, I would love to go to the next Cow Palace gunshow with you and document the event.

Hell I'll even wear my shoulder rig with the 6" S&W 629...

Go for it! I hope more than a few show up. There was a move to get enough signatures to get the Constitution amended and on the 2004 ballot. Does anyone know if that is still making progress or did it fail like the last attempt with vetothegovernor.com?

good idea! alot of folks bring their guns to the gunshow anyway,I am surprised more don't open carry at shows...You do have to be carefull of the law concerning having ammo and a gun to shoot it with at the same time.
I will buy ammo first in the AM before the good stuff is gone then (after ammo is in the trunk)
slip the glock or sp101 on to buy accessories.
I will pm you.
but really it's not going to shock the nice Daly City cops at the door,I do it all the time.
All they do is stick that tag and zip strip in it...it might not make a good media event.
I was thinking of a few hundred gun owners "taking a walk" as protesting while packing may be illegal.
see:"how to own a gun and stay out of jail CA 2001"
page 63 picketing...I may be wrong it may just be work related protesting.
