In the $200-$300 range: Burris or Leupold or Nikon or Cabelas Alaskan Guide?
Any hints on reliable sites for purchasing used optics? Would you recomend it or advise against?

I have became very fond of the Nikon. I have a couple Leupolds and they work well but I like the way the Nikon adjust better (with the clicks)

Old style nikon monarch(team primos label) for $220 is a deal too. http://www.swfa.com/pc-9244-2119-nikon-3-9x40-team-primos-riflescope.aspx

yep that is the other deal that is out there. The Bushnell 4200 @ $239 is a better buy though IMO. It has Rainguard which adds another optical coating for light transmission, it is made in Japan as opposed to the Philippines and it has a better warranty with a 1 time no questions asked replacement and Bushnell customer service is a bit better than Nikon. Disclaimer I own this scope so I may be a bit biased but I bought the team primos for my father when it was $200 (SWFA bumped the price up a bit).

Novice,
Look at the Leupold and Zeiss Conquest scopes. They are made in the USA and both brands have a superior reputation.
The best prices on the Zeiss Conquests are at

The 'demo's are new in the box scopes.
