I am using the lee classic reloader and have the improved dipper set. That is why it is 4.6 grains of unique. I do not have a scale, but need to get one. I have 200 cases with the remington 1.5 primers installed and also have the unique. I am down to getting the bullets. The bullets are going to be for plinking, but I want them to be accurate. What do you think about this,

hornady 158 lead round nose.

4.6 grains of unique

remington 1.5 primers

all in winchester cases.

Is there another lead bullet that would be better.

thanks for helping.

Have you though about hollowbase wadcutters? I use the Speer 148 grainers and they've done very well for me. They work well with lighter powder loads, too, which'll help with the accuracy. Less kick. I use 4 grains of W231/HP-38 for defense loads and 3.5 for practice and range tack driving. For your powder, adjust accordingly.

I would suggest a SWC bullet as opposed to a round nose bullet.

The reason for not using a wc is that I am using it in a lever gun.

Have you looked into a LSWC? A wc may not cycle, but I have seen a Lee 158 LSWC run through a Marlin with no problems before.

i have looked at the LSWC but i just kinda put them in the same category as the WC for not loading good. i have also looked at the

hornady 140 grain lead flat nose.

bulletworks.com # 5, #11 or #13. i have played with all 3 and settled on the 130 gr for target use.

all function fine in my puma. others aaat CASS found them reliable also in other rifle models. YMMV

Yes. Be slow, methodical, and attentive if you decide to venture over 4.7 gr. of Unique. That'd be the limit in Speer #12.

4.6 grains Unique is getting up there.

But it is doubtful the Lee dipper will give that much anyway.

You do need to get a scale as soon as you can to really know though.

I use 4.5 grs with the same components for a std pressure factory duplication load that works well for me.

Yes, it should be a good load. I use 4.5 with 158 grain lead hollow-points as my HD load. Published max loads are all over the place from about 4.6 to 5.2 grains, so you really ought to work up from about 4.2 grains and see what your gun likes.

Thanks for all the help, and when i order I will get a scale. I am thinking the rcbs 502, but I will do some research on the scales. Also I have to order form midway, and out there selection of bullets did i pick the right one.

I entered the SW for the last time today, for three weeks I have been going there to get powder and primers-------nothing on the shelf or the back room.
The guys I talked to at the gun counter said they are so disgusted with the store they are ready to quit, they are tired of turning customers away and trying to expain they don't do the ordering, the big boys do and it's really screwed up.
At any rate Schell's sports has all my business now even tho it is harder for me to get to.
Thanks for listening, Floydster:banghead:

With 4.6grs of Unique you can load any 158gr Lead bullet. I think you will find that the Lee dippers don't throw as heavy a charge as they claim as the charge they give is most likely a absoulute maximum that can be thrown. Regardless, as any load from 4.0 to 5.0 will run the bullet down the bore fine.

SWC and WC bullets cut a nicer paper punch type hole in paper targets for scoring than a RN bullet but accuracy wise they're pretty much the same. The RN bullet will feed from speed loaders much easier and quicker. The target doesn't care so pick the type you like or flip a coin.

The lee dipper probably only throws what its listed as when you leave a heaping mound on top or double scoop. If you push the dipper into the powder instead of scooping it and then tap or brush off the excess with a card they throw .1-.4 less than what they say. I'd say about -.2
