I'm not sure if I posted this in the right spot so if I'm mistaken please feel free to move it.

Anyway, I was wondering if there was a particular scope you would recomend for an encore chambered in .460s&w with a 16 inch barrel, I really would like something with a german no 1 style reticle(though I can make do with a duplex).

Any good EER handgun scope.

Leupold comes to mind.

If this is a hunting handgun, I would avoid the higher fixed powers or variables.

If strictly a benchrest target gun, they would be O.K.

460 xvr?

You mean 460 S&W?

I've got the Encore 15" barrel in 460. It's not very polite. I've sent it to bellmtcs.com for a muzzle brake. Hopefully it'll have much better manners when it returns.

I bought a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8 x 32 (http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=199081) for my Encore. It's mounted with Leupold dual dovetail rings on a one piece base.
It's a great scope. No problems.
It's currently mounted on the 22-250 barrel but will find it's way over to the 460 for deer next year. A friend want to take it bowling for bambi.

feets, it's gonna bite less but bark more.

A fixed 2x is where it's at in a hunting handgun. Leupold, Elite 3200, Nikon, Burris, or Weaver on a budget.

The Leupolds are already linked to. Here's some of the others.....

And on a really tight budget, here's Swift & Bushnell Trophy:

What's the budget? Willing to go used?

+1 on Dr. Tad

I'm not familiar with the 460 caliber, but based on the diameter I am going to assume this is not a flat shooting long range round and is meant for bigger targets:). I think a fixed 2x is plenty out to 100 yds for handgun hunting. Probably more, but I'm not a good enough shot to care too much past that. Certainly if the cartridge is not a flat shooter, 100 yds is about all you will get out of it anyway.

Even if you have a flatter shooting cartridge, consider the range you will be accurately placing shots with a handgun in the field (versus on a bench with sandbags). 2X may be all you need for hunting.

Get more magnification if both the cartridge and you can make use of it. Otherwise, enjoy the wide field of view and no fuss simplicity of a fixed 2x EER!

As already mentioned, there are plenty to choose from. I've been pretty happy with the Bushnell Trophy fixed 2X (have one on a 10" 22LR and one on a 14" 30-30 contender barrel), but I can't seem to find them anymore. Just the 2-6x Trophy variables.

An unfortunate dowside to the 2x scopes for hunting though is the small objective. If you do plan to hunt in low light consider the 4X or variables for their improved light collection. I have both a Leupold 2x and vx 2.5-8. I find the 2x gets
pretty dark when in low light.

I have a 15 inch 460 Mag Encore barrel with a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8 x 32 EER on it. For hunting I use 2,3 or 4 power, target practice I use the higher settings. The higher settings are great for bench work, and if you ever need to make that long shot off a good rest, your scope will be up to the challenge.

I'd say my budget is in the 350-400 area,

when I was looking at the laupold vx-III that redhawks suggested, I stumbled across the Leupold 2.5X IER Scout Scope , and I have found someone selling them with a german no 1 reticle.

How do ya think this scope would do on an encore like the one specified?

Only if you like holding your Encore close. At only 9.3 in. eye relief it's not really ideal for a handgun.

so longer scope = better eye relief?

I'm pretty unframiliar with scopes.

I wouldn't touch anything but a T/C handgun scope. I have had T/Cs, Leupolds and Burris. Check the 2X-7X. The prices aren't bad and they are warrented for life, even if purchased used. There are about 5 listed here at THR right now for $175 to $200.

I used my T/C scope on my Encore and Contender in chambering ranging from .22LR MATCH to .223, .260, 7mm-08, .270, .444 and .45-70. Using stiff handloads, this combination of round/handgun put out some impressive snap. The T/C scopes held their zero, and never failed. I can't say the same for the Leupold and Burris I had. In fact, I went through 2 of the Burris 4-12 pistol scopes.

No the scout scope in not what you need. The Scout scope is for a Scout set up on a rifle, not a handgun. The 9.3 in. eye relief is not long enough for normal handgun shooting.

You need a handgun scope or extend eye relief scope.

As far as the Leupold scopes go, I would recommend them to anyone. They have a life time warranty, even if purchased used also. I have been using Leupold handgun scopes for many many years on heavy recoiling handguns, with not one problem. I have used the 2 X, 4 X and there 2.5 X 8 scopes.

I am also using the Bushnell Elite 2 X 6 handgun scope on my Encore 375 H&H pistol barrel, with not one problem. You want to talk about some recoil, the 375 H&H has it.

The price range you are talking you can find a used 2.5 X 8 Leupold, or a new 4 X Leupold. A Bushnell Elite 2 X 6 is in that price range as well.

Nothing wrong with a Leupold, or Bushnell handgun scope, and the Burris are good handgun scopes as well. I have had 2 T/C scope's fail, so I don't use them any longer. Got them repaired and sold them.

I've had a Burris 2X posi lock for years now. It's got a slightly enlarged front lens area to max out the light (at 2X, a scope needs only a 14 mm front lens to max out light to a human eye's 7mm pupil). So it's as bright as any 2X can get.

OTOH, Leupold will install their German post in just about any scope.

I've had Weaver and Leupold handgun scope go bad. Not bashing them, just how my luck went.

Right now my G2 wears a Trijicon reflex sight because the scopes get too big and heavy for steady off hand shooting.

You would be suprised at the precision a reflex or high quality red dot sight will give you.

I have no problems with the eye relief on my Leupy. It's a handgun scope, not a scout scope.
My arms cover a 6'2" spread tip to tip. I have no problems finding a comfortable 2 handed shooting stance with my arms fully extended or elbows bent.
