Mauser Markings

I posted this other places, but I hate to leave you guys out.

I was looking at a 'sporterized' Mauser the other day. This is probably the cleanest sporter I've seen. Only two markings remain on the gun.

3473a is the serial number. German practice was to number in four-digit blocks plus a letter.

I don't know what the "B" stands for.

I don't know why it has a line of center-punch marks clear around the front receiver ring either.

But I would be very suspect of buying it to shoot.
