What exactly is used for a flash retardant when added to ammo? Is there a low flash powder out there for rifles?

The problem lies in the amount of flash generated from the fast powders used to achieve the velocity. I use 40.0gr of Alliant 2400 in a 45-70 lever gun to achieve slightly over 3,000fps which results in a muzzle flash over ten feet long.

88 grain .458 diameter bullets. Wanting to know if theres something to add to keep the flash down when i load these.

The quote scares me.....40 gr. of 2400 sounds unbelievable.....My 300 gr. JHP load at 2330 fps.is more kick than I like to handle except for a hunting load in my #3 Ruger.....To see what I am talking about......many years ago when I started loading. I too thought I should shoot 110 gr thru 180gr. loads in my 3006. When using 4350 for the powder you could really see a muzzle flash with a max load 110 gr. load and norman am't for a 180gr. load. This was because I used a powder that could be used but wasn't the best choice for a light bullet and max vel. The longer barrel with give more burn time too.....ex. 30 inch milsurp of yesteryear will have less flash....afish4570:neener:;);)

88 grain .458 bullets? Out of sheer curiosity, where do you find these, and loads for them? The smallest I've seen in my manuals are 300 gr, and I thought those were short considering I'm used to 405 gr. Are these shaped like a wafer or something? I want to try them, just to see the ten foot long muzzle flash.
