Polishing an 870's Chamber

Hello All,

I'm working on a 870 Express that I picked up new, but is having problems locking up on ejection. I hear this is common.

Now my gun knowledge consists of taking them apart, and cleaning them up real pretty :D.

So, I have seen that I must polish the chamber, and thought this may be a good jump into it. I have a few questions.

1. Can I easily do this with minimal tools? What tools are required?
2. Can I mess up my barrel? How do I know when I'm done?
3. What technique do you use?

*any picture step by step would be awsome!

Thanks.

You can wind some 0000 (extra fine) steel wool around a bore brush with some oil on it, and use it in an electric drill.

That will remove any tiny microscopic burs left from the chamber reamer and my help some.

To do it right takes a Flex-Hone and special honing oil, or an automotive brake-cylinder hone and any light oil.

600 or higher grit emery paper wrapped around a dowel does a pretty good job also.

If it is new, though, I would return it to the store. What you are thinking of doing will void the factory warranty.

but is having problems locking up on ejection. Before you get all excited, try some different ammo in it.

There are reports of some of the cheap bulk-pack stuff from Wally-World not working too well. It swells up in the chamber and won't come out.

That is not a gun problem.
It is a cheap ammo problem.

You beat me to it, very good advice

I have experienced that problem on both my Mossberg and Remington and each time it has proven to be the cheap ammo. I would guess we are buying ammo that has been stored for years and because of the world famous ammo salesman, Obama Bin Biden, there is now a need to empty the warehouses .

It has nothing to do with "stored for years".

It is just a sign of the times to make stuff ever cheaper, at ever lower quality.

If it works in most guns, they don't really care any more if it works in all guns.

Used three different loads, including Remington range loads, estate, and federal.

If it will not extract Federal bulk pack loads - send it back to Remington. Newer 870 Express's are normally dodgy with the cheap Winchester fodder but 100% with everything else.

If you have tried several different types of ammo and its still having problems, I would take it back to were you got it if it’s from a real “gun shop” (not Wal-Mart). Hopefully they will be able to help you. If not contact Remington, I had a problem with a Remington 522 Viper and Remington had me take it to a local gunsmith first for warranty work.

I only say this because you said it is new, see if you can have it fixed/replaced before you make any modifications that will almost guarantee it will cost you to have it fixed if you can’t do it yourself.

It may just need to be shot some more...break in.

That is what the 0000 steel wool in post #2 is for.

It will only accelerate break-in by removing microscopic burr's, and will not void the warrentee, because there is no way they could tell you did it.
