Recently purchased a Leupold FXIII 12 X 40 AO scope to put on my Ruger No. 1 22-250. Couple buddies have said scope needs to be variable 6-18 X 40 in order to be usefull for varmint guns. What do you guys think? Should I look at selling the 12X and getting a variable? If I opt not to change scopes what do you think my range limitations will be? Anyone got Nikon Monarch or Leupold VXII in 6-18 X 40 they would consider trading?

You should be fine with the 12X. Snipers used 10x fixed scopes for years and many still do. I know many people use the 10 Super Sniper for varmint hunting. That being said I doubt anyone would trade a Monarch 6-18x as it is a much better scope than the Leupold. I say keep it and prove them wrong.
