Long Distance Shooting...Where do you go...and if you are not at a "Rifle Range" how

do you set up? What do you use to sit on and rest your rifle on? What type of target do you use? What do you use to post the target on? At 500 yards and beyond how big of a target do you use? Do you simply set up a standard 100 yard target? How large is the target?

I am going to go do some long range shooting in a couple of weeks and want to see what you all do when you go to shoot at these types of distances.

I am planning on using perhaps 4 sheets of posterboard and then setting up a target in the middle of it. I think we will use chicken wire and either staple it to a couple of one by ones or use a couple of pieces of rebar and wrap the chicken wire around it.

I made a stand out of metal pipe screwed together(kinda looks like a mini swingset), hung a 9" inch hardened steel plate on it, and walk it out to different dstances out to 900 yards or so. For paper targets, I will just get a leftover cardboard box I have laying around and staple targets to that and walk them out to the distance I want. You first time you will want paper targets that are pretty big so if you are off by a good bit you can make corrections by seeing where you hit.
As far as a rest I lay in the back of my truck and use a pack for a rest, since that is the type of situation I'm likely to encounter while hunting.

I like hanging steel plates. Hits are far easier to call when the target reacts.
You will never see a hole in paper at long ranges, optics or not.

I use a 12X12 steel plate about 3/16" to 1/2" depending on what I can find at the machine shop or cardboard. set it at 600M +

Reference FM 23-10 for set up instructions, but to make it short you sit, pron, standing.

A sling is used most often but a Bi pod is ok.

The range in my back yard is 800 yards.....for now. If I want to shoot farther I usually ride down a powerline on the ATV and shoot there. Not exactly legal though.
