Adding a bipod to an SKS?

I have a Norinco SKS and would really like to put a bipod on it, specifically one of those neat looking ones that uses the bayonet lug to mount since I do not have a bayonet for it. What is the legality of this?

It's perfectly legal -there's no law against bipods. But why would you do it?

Dear Sir:
In answer to your specific questions, the following modifications of an SKS type rifle WOULD _NOT_ BE A VIOLATION of Section 922 (r):
.
.
.
.
.
With respect to attaching a bipod to a standard configuration SKS rifle; standard configuration SKS rifles are not approved for importation with bipods. Therefore, the attachment of a bipod would be a violation of Section 922(r)

What do they mean by "standard configuration"??? MY SKS already has a sporter stock and detachable mag, and it wasnt a C&R import to the best of my knowledge.

try looking around on those boards. from my understanding adding the bipod does not matter to the C&R it matters to the 1989 ban and would make the rifle illegal.

Oh well, I just wanted to put a bipod on it because I thought they looked pretty neat and I wouldnt have to bring the sandbags, but if I have to worry about some knobjockey at the range turning me in I guess I better play it safe .:banghead:

"standard configuration"???
Good question. I have no idea.
The general consensus in dealing with SKS rifles and bipods is a sporting bipod is probably OK, one that clamps on, or attaches by a swivel stud, not permanently attached to the gun.
That is from James Bardwell ( bardwell@netcom.com ), one of the most knowledgable folks around in interpreting ATF's arcane writings.
