After much searching, I ordered my first NVD: ATN Paladin 390

And I can't wait until it gets here!

I did a lot of searching and researching when it came to my first NVD. I found that Cabelas has a good price for them and figured I'd have to spend much more than I would be willing to fork out to get something drastically better.

I've got an IR filter on a mini maglite (3 watt led) that I can use to supplement the scope.

Anyone have any praise/booing/elitistjabs to throw my way?

Not trying to sound like a jerk, but you just wasted a lot of money on a Gen I. Pony up and get a Gen III because I have a feeling you are going to be greatly disappointed.

Since I know for a fact that decent Gen IIIs got for thousands and thousands of dollars, coupled with the fact that I'm a poor starving college student trying to beat his way into med school, I'm going to go ahead and not "pony up" and get a GenIII.

All the reviews for this scope are positive. My local IPSC club president has one and he really likes it. I've got an external IR source that will acompany it. It's no GenIII/IV/thermal, but it'll do for the purpose I bought it for (night-time hog hunting)

Please post a detailed review after you have had it a while. We would love to hear how it works.

I have never had the opportunity to look through a "high resolution Gen 1+" scope as the link describes it. I have looked through normal low resolution gen 1 scopes. I have also looked through gen 3 tubes and can say that there is just no comparison.

When you add in the much longer tube life and ruggedness of the gen 3 equipment you realize that you do get what you pay for. That's why I didn't buy night vision when I was a starving undergrad, I used a red clip on floodlight.

After graduating and working a few years I saved up and bought a gen 3.

From my experience good analogy is: gen 1 is to gen 3 as an 10" B&W TV from 1946 is to a 60" 1080p HDTV.

YMMV.

I have installed 3 ATN scopes for customers, 2-Gen I's and a Gen-3 the Gen I's worked fine for hogs according to the owners. I checked them out and the Gen-3 is superior to the Gen-I's but the cost is much greater. They are bulky and heavy, I'm trying the ND3X40 Green Laser light mounted on my scope.

Yes, please post a review once you try it out for a while. On this thread, 'cause I just subscribed to it.

Do shoot some live ammo. What type of rifle and recoil?

My main concern is eye relief. I have a general purpose Gen1 monocular, and though it is not designed to be a rifle scope, the eyepiece has to be right up to my eyeball. If it was a scope and I was shooting anything more that .22 LR, I'd be way concerned about "scope bite".
