How do I use I shooting sling?

Just got my K-31, as you know, and I'm interested in getting into some service rifle or high power competitioins (once I'm proficient with my rifle, of course...). Many here talk about shooting with a sling as an aid, and I'm curious to how this is done. Mind you, the K-31's sling mounts on the left side of the stock and is a simple adjustable leather strap.
