Just got a redding 2400 trimmer and still learning how to use it. Unfortunately first attempts yielded brass legnths of around 1.735.

When is short to short? I'm loading 55 gr winchester bulk with H335.

I have taken any cartridges of 1.760 or longer and tried to trim to around 1.75(seems to get around 1.745 and 1.750). If its less than 1.760 do I leave it alone for now?

Not trying to get match grade accurancy just functionality from my AR15

Anyone have any tips on the 2400?

Thanks

I have trimmed mine back to 1.740 and some even a little shorter than that. Too short should not be the real problem with .223. Too long (< 1.760") and you may run into overpressure problems or cases that stick in the chamber.

1.740 is the primary trim for using the RCBS X-Die, so that's more than safe enough. The 1.760 number printed in the manuals is the maximum length.

Trim-to-length is somewhat arbitrary. As long as the bullets stay put, you're fine.

The only downside to a very too short neck is chamber erosion.

Without the case neck there to shield it, the front of the chamber would be subjected to the same bore erosion that eventually happens to the rifling leade.

I run into that too..mine run shorter then the 1.750.. not a big deal.if u go 1.740 your still fine,i have some at 1.735 i just take all my once fired brass, and just trim them,I use a lyman trimmer.. I still cant figure out why they trim to dif, lenghts even after the locks are in place,
I wont knock your self out over it,shorter is fine,

Thanks Guys

Just out of curiosity does the case size effect point of impact say at 50 or 100yrds?

Wondering if I should set those short one aside as I zero in my scope?
