I am trying to get my paranoid Dad to have the guns I paid for "transferred" to me. I have a Shotgun and a Pistol, and both were by by him. Since I know I am okay with the Shotty, that's not an issue. The Pistol is.

I have dug this up:

Utah Code 76-10-509.4. Prohibition of possession of certain weapons by minors.

(1) A minor under 18 years of age may not possess a handgun.
(2) Except as provided by federal law, a minor under 18 years of age may not possess the following:
(a) a sawed-off rifle or sawed-off shotgun; or
(b) a fully automatic weapon.
(3) Any person who violates Subsection (1) is guilty of:
(a) a class B misdemeanor upon the first offense; and
(b) a class A misdemeanor for each subsequent offense.
(4) Any person who violates Subsection (2) is guilty of a third degree felony.

I am NOT a minor, I'm 19 and will be 20 in a couple months. Can I show this to my old man and have him sign a bill of sale, and be done with it?

I don't know about Utah, but unless your state has any other funny laws, you can possess a handgun if you are 18 or over, you just can't buy one from an FFL until you are 21. So you can be "gifted" a pistol, or you can buy one privately.

I think you'll find that over-18 'possess' means you can hold it, use it fire it, in the presence of the over-21 owner-of-record. Not that you can keep sole control and ownership of it.

I'd suggest that even if you find you have safe legal grounds (which in itself is questionable) pushing your Dad may cause him to refuse any thought of you getting any more guns until that magic 21st birthday comes around. Our opinions may effect what you think, but they aren't likely to effect what he thinks - and right now he's holding all of the cards. It's more important to have access rather then legal ownership, and when it comes to access you seem to be doing O. K. - - so far.

I was once in your shoes, and smart enough to let well enough alone for the time being. Hopefully you will do the same. It isn't worth stiring up something when you have such a short time to wait, and a year or so isn't really that long.
