first time reloading

I have been reading this board for 2 months and trying to get as much information as I can. I have read the Lyman 49Th and the ABC's of Reloading.
I got the Lee Classic Turret Press and everything that was suggested by the posts I read here. Caliper, RCBS scale, Lee Auto Prime and more.
My gun is an FNP 45.
I made up a few rounds today and shot them. I shot a factory round first and my 3 rounds after that. the factory round shot fine and ejected the spent case and loaded my round. My round fired and felt a little lighter than the factory but not much. The problem is that it didn't eject the case or load the next round.
This is what I used:
4.8g w231, Hornady 230g FMJRN (ENC) which presume means enclosed because the entire bullet is jacketed. CCI 300 primers, col of 2.70.
I have seen so much load data that I am confused. I am thinking that my COL is too long because that 4.8 g is consistent with Winchester load data but my Lyman Manual has a COL of 1.270.
Any help you could give would be great.

The manual I'm looking at says 4.9 is start load with 231.you may want to step on the gas a little

Hornady # 6 shows a 5.0 grain Starting load with that bullet, and a MAX load of 5.7 with WW231.

CCI 300 primers, col of 2.70.
2.70" OAL would be a little bit too long alright! :D
Probably what you want is 1.70"!

Hornady does show 1.230" OAL with the RN-ENC and 1.20" OAL with the flat-point ENC.

But, mil-spec for a 230 RN-FMJ is 1.266" - 1.271", so I think you are O.K.
I'd just bump up the powder charge a little more.

The Encapsulated bullets have a plated jacket and are probably a little softer then real jacketed bullets.

The encapuslated Hornday's are more like a jacketed bullet, with a gas check applied. Speer has plated TMJ bullets....

Most beginners are urged to start at the bottom-end loads and work up,but it's usually not the best place to start I found out...the loads are just plain wimpy, and won't cycle some autos as you've found out.
After a short while I started at the mid-range level, and worked up slowly from there if I felt the need for more oomph for whatever reason.
Your decision on where to start of course, but that has been my experience.
