So why the shortage in primers?

First it was lead, the supply has slightly increased and prices decreased. Now its small pistol primers. There are waiting lists around Phoenix to get them. Large pistol seems to be ok. Is this an Obama deal with people stocking up or was there a production failure or something?
At this rate why ban the weapons if you cant even get components or even ammo at Walmart. Its pretty sad...

Gotta be regional; around this part of VA I've had no trouble with any size of primer.

No problem finding primers at all...maybe you're not looking in the right places.

Locally they're hard to find, but I just ordered another 20,000 SP primers on line.

I haven't seen anymore trouble finding primers than normal around here. I know powder valley is just about out of primers.

I think its a little bit of everything. Retail shops doesn't order enough in their orders and don't stay on the shelf long. Companies say that they can't keep up with orders, The militaries have their contracts that the supplier doesn't want to loose. Some days they have what I want and, a lot of days they don't.

Small pistol primers are getting hard to find in Tucson as well. One shop owner said he doesn't know why other places were out, he isn't having any trouble ordering... That was at least 2 weeks ago and the shipment he ordered still isn't in. I sure hope they come because I am dangerously low.

Still available in our area. When I was talking to the lady at RCBS customer service a couple months ago, she said they they had sold more presses in 2 years than in the previous 8 years combined. When ammo prices skyrocketed, the number of new reloaders skyrocketed. There is a shortage of components because there are millions of us suckers buying and hoarding for fear of never having them again.
Meanwhile, you might notice that Obama hasn't lifted a finger toward us yet.
Right now, we're doing this to ourselves.

Do a search for HR 45, which is a bill in the House of Representatives. It's from a Rep. from Illinois, by the way.
Just because the "media" hasn't reported it, doesn't mean it's not occuring.
Of course this is just my opinion, which is worth what you paid for it, but I belong to several gun rights organizations and there is a movement afoot, over and above what's been introduced in the past, to severely restrict our firearm rights.
We should also all be thankful there are more reloaders joining our ranks, since sales drive innovation......
Hope this helps.

Watched a video of primer making it was awhile back so I don't remember the brand. The primer metal parts were formed by machines but humans filled the primers in large trays. Does anyone know if this is still the way they are filled. The story went into how these folks took a long time getting good at primer filling. If all the brands do this hand filling thing, maybe that is causing a shortage with all the increased sales.
My local place had a shortage of Winchester primers for awhile but are back in stock last week. :)

Pistol and shotgun primers are pretty abundant in central VA but the rifle primers are getting a little tougher to come by.

I cannot find any small rifle primers in Dallas except at Southwest Ammo and they are asking that you limit your purchase and buy another product while you're there. So I bought a pound of H335 and was able to buy 200 primers. The market is very tight here.

ReloaderFred hit the nail on the head. More change is coming and less than 30 days in office an overreach wouldn't be smart. I don't want to inject politics into this but it is without a doubt fueling the various shortages. He is keeping his promises so far.
Some say our buying habits are also causing the shortages. Had I listened to those who say buying in moderation would help I would be unable to shoot .223/5.56. It's bad enough I can't get Varget, H4895, etc. Some powders and primers are available in 1# and 1,000 sleves, for the volume of shooting I do it would very expensive.
Whatever the cause of the shortages it is real and not getting better as far as I can tell. I am not Chicken little, I am merely reading various forums and it backs up my real world experiences. Reading HR 45 is just another thing that gets placed in the equation.
