CCW at home??

Just wondering how many *other people here slip a little "something" in their pockets or put on a lighter pistol for carry while in their house. I began to do it years ago when I was down in my basement and realized just how long it would take me to get upstairs and to my gunsafe if someone broke in.

When I lived back in the states, I used to carry in my home all the time. I didn't have a CCW (California), so it was really the only place I could feel safe at. I'm not saying I never carried anywhere else, but I did so only when I felt it totally necessary.

When I lived in Washington State, I had a CCW, and carried everywhere, everyday no matter what the circumstances.

When I lived in Oregon, I did the same as In Washington.

When I return to the United States, I will go back to my old ways. I am planning to carry everywhere I go. I am also planning on getting a CCW permit in whatever state the Air Force decides I need to go to.

I happen to be fortunate enough to live in an upscale quiet and family oriented neighborhood at the end of a cul-de-sac so I don't really worry about home invasions during the day. I do, however, have guns at both ends of the house and always have one very close at hand in the evening, whether I am in my office or watching tv. Since I always carry my Guardian .32 when I leave the house it often times remains in my pocket when I return. Mike

I just about always have a firearm very close by or on my person. Course that is just so I can fight my way back to the shottys but it'll do in a pinch.

Home invasion seems to be the "in" thing with pill heads and meth monkeys these days, and is getting more and more popular. NC, at one time, had a charge of "aggravated burglary", an armed burglary of an obviously occupied residence, that carried a possible death penalty. That will never go nation-wide, so the alternative to "home invasion" is "home carry". I always have one either on my person or within reach. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean you're not on someones' visit list. I see more and more "strange" cars at times - our area that is not on any "through" route - and wonder. Our mailman and several of the regular delvery drivers have commented on seeing one or two cars in particular that seem to be out scouting. They are out there.

Carry all the time at home, either open or concealed.

Comes in handy for killing rattlesnakes, too ;)

Not in my county, not with out a permit and a tax tag. I kid you not.

I don't carry but my new M17S and 2 loaded 30 round mags now watch over my bed :) I REALLY need to clean my room as I KNOW there are two 15 round Glock magazines in there somewhere filled with Fed Premium Def . . . I haven't looked under the matress yet . . . I guess that's a little to obvious :banghead:

Don't yet, but plan to soon. Now that MO has CCW coming, that will increase my times of having a gun on me. I was actually thinking about this the other night. I was sitting watching TV and thought, If someone(s) came crashing through front or backdoor, I'd be screwed with the gun at the other end of the house...

I have a plan of hiding several guns throughout my house. Probably my SP101 either on me at all times, or near my computer (since that's where I'm at 90% of the time I'm awake.)
Long gun and Beretta in the bedroom. And a couple others somewhere, possibly kitchen and garage.

(Hmmmm....maybe I can train the dog to use a shotgun, she could keep it in her house by her food dish and be perimeter control...dog is a 6 month old lab mutt, not the best guard dog by nature, so she needs the Heat!)

Carry at home, what do you think I am, paranoid!?! 911 will take care of me.

Ok, seriously...

I do carry a gun most of the time at home. Usually my Bersa .380 or Taurus 85 tucked in my pocket or the Taurus 85 IWB and tucked, and sometimes my 1911, CZ or S&W 65LS IWB. Just because you live in the 'burbs doesn't mean nothing can ever happen to you (in fact, aren't many home invasions done in middle class and above neighborhoods). Also, I am currently a FT student and it is an online program so I am often at home during the day, the time when most home break-ins happen so I just might be here when someone breaks in expecting an unoccupied house.

In fact, home is the only place I can carry due to MD's idiotic laws. I can't even carry a stun gun. But then I guess I just have a bad attitude. I guess I should be grateful that the state in its great benevolence allows me to at least carry a folding knife (a fixed blade or blade over 4 or 5" on the other hand would be illegal) and pepper spray to defend myself.:fire:

Once upon a time, I depended on my old Dobe as a guard dog. Figured he would give me at least 30 seconds to reach the gun cabinet, and he was alert and protective right up to the end. Now that he is gone, we have two terriers - watch dogs par excellence, but not guard dogs even though they would attack at ankle level. Of the two, I prefer the terriers for home security. They have learned from our actions what to listen for (they alert to the mail carriers car as a "friendly", but let us know when he is at the next-door neighbor box). At night, dead to the world, ANY new noise outside brings growls and yaps before they are even completely awake. That, and keeping a gun at hand, makes for a good first step.

At home, the Makarov in .380 is always handy, even when everything else is sleeping in the safe.

Once I get home from work and check the rooms (we had a break in back in Oct. 2000) with the Makarov, I open the safe and get Mr. Rem 870 stoked with buckshot out and lean him up in his usual place.

For walks out on the property, and we've got 30 acres of Ozark Mountain woodlands, I always take along an M-1 Carbine. It's light, holds 15 rounds, and is very handy to carry.

When I am home, I either have one on me, or have one within arm's reach pretty much at all times.

#8 birdshot is waaay too small for home defense. i've kept #1 buck in mine since i read this: http://www.firearmstactical.com/briefs10.htm

as far as carry at home, i'm not 21 yet either so i just keep my mossberg loaded next to my bed

Nah, its plenty big enough. The benefit to #8 is that inside of a house it is still really tight (my house doesnt have enough room for it to spread bigger than a human body) and it doesnt go thru walls with the same velocity on the other side. Its much safer in my suburban neighborhood with a Jr. High and a School for the Disabled 100yds and 20yds away respectively.

I consider myself fortunate as well. But I'm not complacent. My 640 is with me throughout the day.

2 months ago one of our quiet, family-oriented neighbor's homes was raided at 5am. Turns out the guy in the 4000sqft house with the german sports cars and large SUVs is a heroin junkie. No one had a clue. But it did explain the abnormally high street traffic, the missing items from cars, and the missing items from homes. He may be gone, but his friends still drive by his old house.

Your socio-economic position does not isolate you from crime. And by the way, in an area such as yours, the criminals know odds are both you and your spouse are at work during the day.

I asked the question out of curiosity.
My old school room-mate was murdered because he made the decision to leave his .38 Special behind. The outcome may or may not have turned out differently had he had his revolver, however he would at the very least, had a better chance. We had put thousands of rounds downrange. He was a good shot.
Thanks for the replies. I'm pleased that so many feel the way I do.

Y'know, I really think the place to discuss that other thread would be in that other thread. :scrutiny:

As for this thread -- I carry, all day every day. Home or not, it doesn't matter.

I have kids, and I don't trust "child proof" anything. The safest place for my gun to be is on my hip.

Oh, Yeah, if I don't actually carry a firearm on my person there are 3 handguns and a rifle in the living room and another handgun and a shotgun in the bedroom. Then there are all those guns in the safe.
Kinda reminds me of Rottweiler Blues by the late great Warren Zevon
" Got a Glock in the bedside table
Machine gun leaning by the bedroom door
Kevlar vest in the closet
Well, I wear it when I go to the store.
...
If you come calling
He'll be mauling with intent to maim
Don't knock on my door
If you don't know my Rottweiler's name.
...
Well, he's dreaming about
an intruder or two
And the promise of burglar blood
He's yearning to chew on a
gangster tattoo
And to hear the proverbial sickening thud."

I am not complacent either and I was not inferring that I consider myself better than anyone else. To your comment that criminals know that most couples are both out working during the day, if that is true, then tell me how is having a gun on me going to help when I'm not at home anyway? At 5 a.m., you better believed I am armed or any other time when the world is not yet awake. I was simply stating that there are those times, such as noon on a Saturday, where I really don't think a bunch of gang bangers are going to pull up in front of my house and come storming in. By the way, whenever anyone comes to the door, I am always armed.
YMMV! Best to all, Mike

I don't usually carry at home; I'm close to a firearms at most times, but not on me. Why?

Terrain and architecture. My house is three stories and situated on the side of a hill, my only threat vector is the front door on the first floor. The first floor contains the garage, the front door and a flight of stairs to the second story and the main living area. The master bedroom is on the third floor and the stairs from the 1st and 2nd floor are in plain view/shotgun area-denial, from the master bedroom door. You can’t get into the backyard unless you can fly or go through the house. It’s and interesting situation, but extremely defensible. Therefore, I don’t carry at home.

Of course, answering the front door to an unknown is a different thing altogether.

I didn't mean to infer you were inferring ... no offense intended.

The 'you live in a good neighborhood' rhetoric is what I hear directed toward me from the in-laws. Too many times people feel insulated by their surroundings, and become complacent. Thus, my heroin addict story.

I brought up the middle-of-the-day thing because a lot of people prepare for the noise at midnight, but don't consider the daytime. Goblins keep track of schedules, you may be home one day when they least expect it.

I'll agree, noon on Saturday with the neighbors out the bangers aren't going to storm in. But homes do get robbed in the middle of the day.
