Ever buy something for no good reason?

I just got my specials email from tapco and they have sten mags for $4.99. Well at that price I had to order 5. Problem is, I don't have a sten, not planning on buying a sten, and don't have a good lie to tell the wife about the sten mags when they come in.

I bought a pound of Alliant Steel when it was on the clearance table for $7.95. I don't reload for shotgun, but at that price, why not pick it up. I may try it in a mild 357mag load one day (using relative quickness as a guide, it's close to some powders used for mag loads).

yup.

You cannot tell what the future will bring you.

Hence, I have a lot of "stuff".

I frequently buy magazines for guns I do not own. It gives me the excuse to buy that gun later. You know, the old, "I already have the magazines and the ammunition, gotta get the gun or all of that is wasted," excuse.

Mostly tools. I have an 880 lbs winch that I can't install until I finish my wiring job in the garage. Only guns stuff I can't use is stuff I can collect for free. I have 2 quarts of 9mm brass, polished no less, and I don't have a 9mm yet.

I did buy a Smith and Wesson Sigma once...

My H&R single shot 12 gauge...
My Enfield #4...

Wait a minute, isn't "it's so darn cute" a valid reason?

Oh hell yeah.

Latest?

A Remington Model 81 in .300 Savage.

I don't hunt anymore, and probably won't again (but you never know).

I bought it because it was chambered in .300 Savage. I have two other .300s, so I figured I needed to complete the trifecta...

Picked up a 100-rd case of Winchester 12ga, and my only reason is that it was $6.00.

I suppose I'll have to get myself a shotgun now... :D

Everything I buy ALWAYS has a reason.

Of course, I may not know the reason at the time of purchase, but that hardly matters now, does it?

In general, I almost always think through purchases thoroughly. Spending indiscriminately is a great way to beat the hell out of your wealth. But then again, it is a great way to have fun. One just has to make a choice to see which is most important to them. For me, it is surely wealth. At this point in my life, if I do things right, I'll have more money than I can use after a decade or two. Only then, will I start to spend more indiscriminately.

My Armalite. I really have no need of it. I just wanted it and bought it on impulse one day. I don't regret it, but I'd be lying if I said it was a carefully considered decision.

I bought a Blackie Collins "letter opener", it's an all Zytel folding lockback with a non-ferromagnetic copper-beryllium spring.

It's just a conversation piece, and I think the shipping from One-Stop Knife shop.com cost more than the knife did. :scrutiny:

It's fun getting bliss-ninnys all hot and bothered about the "9/11 high-tech anti-X-ray spy knife" until I tell them it was $7.00. :D

Yes.

Since i have bought my pistol, I have developed a terrible compulsive spending disease. It's terrible. I'll see something I don't necessarily need, but then I have to have it.

Glad I'm not alone.

I bought a really fine leather western holster in Mexico, for the princely sum of $7. It was black and the belt and holster were cut from one piece of leather. The only problem was - I didn't have any gun that would fit it - not even close. :(

Obviously, I solved that problem with the "necessary" purchase of a good western type revolver. See how things just work out for the best???? :D

When I start feeling like I need to find good reasons to buy gun stuff, it'll be time to go find another hobby.

This could explain why I suddenly want a Colt 38 Super.

No good reason. Already own 45's, 9mm, 357. Don't have 38 super dies. Don't have fancy hand tooled leather holster for BBQ's, don't have ammo, brass, or really know much about 38 supers.

But I figure for around $2000.. I could learn a whole lot.

I don't NEED a 44 cal Marlin Cowboy gun. I don't even shoot cowboy style. besides I'd have to get another vaquero...

Oh and is anyone else drooling over that new AWA Lightning rifle? The case hardened one?

I'm the other way around...I used to tend to over-think solutions and buy stuff that I think I need when in reality I don't...now that I got it out of my system, I don't do it anymore.

I bought a Volvo once, but I don't know why, since it was always in the dealer's service department and I had to drive something else. ;)

Yup.

Earlier this year I moved out a place with a 5 car garage. The vehicles lived outside and didn't have room inside for a bicycle.

Now they still outside but have bigger garage.

Sho glad I don't own a big airplane hangar, take weeks to fill it.

Have parts for guns...
That I no longer own,
That I have never owned,
And that I probably won't ever own.

I've got a gun safe, closet, tool boxes, and shelves full of shooting-related stuff I don't need, didn't buy for anything even remotely resembling a good reason, but couldn't bear to sell or throw out—but I'm not a pack rat!

Leaning towards Skunk...Living near D.C. alone is enough to suck alot of spare change out of my pockets. Most of the really major (i.e. new gun) purchases are pretty carefully though out for now. The little stuff doesn't count.

What nobler reason is there than to support our economy?

October 1, 2003, 11:10 PM
Well, there might possibly be one or two items out there in the garage. I got a Cheaper Than Dirt catalog today, and they had some of the BIG 50 calibre ammo boxes...I'm sure that there is something around the place that would only fit into one of those boxes, don't ya think? Since that is pretty likely, I probably should order three or four, so I have opne ready in case I buy something else that will only fit into one of those boxes.

But seriously, gun nuts have it easy. You haven't a clue as to what serious amounts of stuff are until you take up rockhounding. It only takes three trips to pick up all the agate and jasper you could tumble in a lifetime. After that, it is mounds, and then mountains of garage floor and back yard ballast. Another cool thing about rockhounding is it provides a great opportunity for my wife and I to wear our matching 6" 686's with the handtooled western leather belts and holsters w/matching speedloader holsters.

God bless and y'all be careful out there.

All the time. I usually invent a reason later.

October 2, 2003, 12:48 AM
What is this "reason" of which you speak? ;)

The box was marked $10, I had a ten spot. I don't have the ten spot, I do have a box that contained a 3 ton hydraulic jack, brand new pint of Hoppe's No. 9( sealed never opened Penguin Ind.), unopened 1 # container of 231 pwdr, Swisher Sweets cigar box ( with one cigar and the nail to seal box no less),unopened mlitary utility brush (M16 style) , half a box of 12 ga multi purpose shells #8 shot, and one Azoom snap cap for 9mm.

Gee... toys! I'm dryfiring my 9, smoking a cigar and raising and lowering the cigar box to the wafting scent of no. 9...more entertainment than going to a movie...:D

Bought some sort of chinese bandoleer from a friend who has a resale business- have absolutely no use for it, but it only cost me $3. Bought a mosin nagant M44 with a completely shot out bore for $30- was an impulse buy and I really wanted a mosin nagant as a wallhanger anyhow.

While you may not have a "need" for those magazines right now, they can always be used for trading fodder. Ya never know when you might find someone who does need them and make a good trade.

Now I'm in real trouble. Center fire systems and SOG sent me their catalogs. And Center fire has rusted out Yugo SKS's for 59 bucks. How can I pass up a $59 dollar SKS? I wonder if you could modify it to take sten mags?...?:scrutiny:

Yep, an engagement ring. Took awhile to get to the "no good reason" part.

I got a gun collection for my wife, it was a good trade. ;)
