The old ones from the late 70's/early 80's were made of 440C and tended to be brittle. They were, in fact, the very knives that inspired Lynn Thompson to start Cold Steel, after he broke these knives during martial arts sparring.

I have owned two of them for years. One survived a year in the sand without issue. I used it for everything a knife should not have been used for. My only complaint is the handle can get toasty after a little while in the sun. Mine sharpen up quickly and hold an average edge. They are only designed to stick things and look wicked. I still keep them around because they hold memories. Many knives are far better so unless you have to have one I would look at other more useful designs.

The originals were L6 steel with a canted blade. Quite collectible.
It was the later knives that were 440C.
