Thinking about another Mak...

I find that I like shooting it so much, and the ammo' is pretty cheap, that I'm concerned I don't "love it to death"...
Besides, my wife is eyeing the one I have (with Checkered Walnut grip)...thinking of another one to go the more "traditional" Pearce grip route and spread the wear out over time.
Accessories are fairly cheap @ www.makarov.com ... I think I'm going to save my pennies and find another one...probably a Bulgy like the one I have.

You can't have too many Maks. I have five. Don't worry, you won't wear it out, but it may get stolen by the wife, so get another. Bulgies are a great deal.

They can be addicting.....
(1) MILSURP Bulgarian, still in wrapper.
(1) MILSURP Bulgarian, customized
(1) Commercial Russian
(1) MILSURP Russian (rare!)
When I find a good deal on a clean EG, I'll have a total of 5!

...they're great fun.
My Mak' is probably the best "no-fuss" choice I have for getting to the range, getting in some practice, getting it cleaned, back in the safe, without breaking the bank...
Now to decide where to get it and to confirm whether I want another Bulgy, or maybe a Russian commercial...

...sitting on the desk at the indoor range I visit.
The business has changed hands this summer and I have no way of getting in touch with the former owner who would know who made the grip. :(
I just happened to be at the right place at the right time...although it didn't feel like it at the time. An expensive wooden grip I had purchased had just broken in two while shooting. The guy I bought that grip from made it right.
I need to take some digital pic's of my Mak' and post them, it really is a great looking piece.
Best wishes,

My recent catalog from Southern Ohio Gun had POLISH Makarovs - new. I've never heard of Polish Mak's before.

...but they don't show on their web site.
How much?

p.s. Is it a "Radom" ? http://makarov.com/others/index.html

Poland didn't make Makarovs - it is just 9x18 caliber or 9MM Makarov. They are Polish P-64s. Perhaps a little intentional deceptive advertising - "Oh, we didn't mean they were Makarovs, we meant they were 9MM Makarov caliber" Got this link from the Makarov forum:

You can't have too many Maks. I've only got 1 at the moment, but I'd like to end up with at least 3. One to carry, one to keep in the safe (to keep it looking pretty), and one to convert to .32 NAA, just because...

I'm trying to decide whether I want ONE more or TWO more.
Where I live, a local purchase of a Mak' could be anywhere from $125-$175 for Bulgy's or Russians.
Good luck,

BTW - Kevinch, Nice Pic'!!

Ohhhh. Pretty. Got to get a sight job for mine. (Got about 3KFRNs worth of dental work to buy first.) What is that rear sight? It looks like it might be adjustable.

$240 is way high. I'll be picking a Bulgarian up tomorrow, God willing, for which $175 passed from my hands to the dealers.

Maks are good, inexpensive, pistols... that's why I have five as well.
All but my East German have had sight upgrades, and that makes them even better, IMO.

I hope ya''ll realize what you've done! I've been reading all this Makaholic ranting so I went to the gunshow today to see if I could get a look at one and what they happen to be going for. I came home $169 poorer and with a Bulgarian and two mags in cosmoline. I took it straight to the range, cleaned it up and....oh my goodness! I like this. Thank goodness I breezed by a website earlier showing how to disassemble. I didn't really pay attention but did notice the part about pulling the trigger guard down to get it apart. Guess I'll be back for a closer look now because I did struggle a bit getting it back together.

I've yet to hear from someone who's range tested a P-64 and been happy with it.
So far, they generally look good, but function has been unsatisfactory for many...

yeah, reading on Gunboards.com Mak forum the guys there seem to have problems with the safeties dropping when they fire the P-64....which is depressing because those little guns look cool and pretty collectible
maybe they'll get some in that WORK

Not a full range report but I did get it to the range today...put about 90 rounds through it with ZERO Malf's, and was satisfied with it's performance especially considering my level of marksmanship.
Some pic's of the Mak and a couple of my better targets.
1st target is B8 center at 7 yds - 8 rounds slow fire, Winchester FMJ
2nd target is B27 center at 10 yds - 16 rounds rapid fire (2 strings), Barnaul FMJ.
I'm pretty happy with it.

i got 1.im very impressed.the lil booger put all 8 in the black-the FIRST time,no adjustin,no fumblin..now i understand what the fuss is about makarovs.i compared bullet size of a typical 9mm(9x19) vs the 120 gr jhp i got for the mak(9x18)i think the mak will make a good ccarry gun when the law passes here, otherwise,im just going to shoot it as often i can get to the range.these are fun guns.:D

the 120 grain jhp i have are the silverbear ammo.they are hot.i got some of the barnaul jhp and some s&b (very expensive)ball ammo too.i do like the barnaul now the best.the recoil isnt as sharp in them as it is in the silverbear.i would recommend getting the wolf mag springs for the mags.it was the first thing i did as i do with any good auto is change out the springs with wolf.
