Is there any difference in the dimensions of a 10/22 magnum barrel and a 10/22 long rifle barrel? Green Mountain has the mag barrel for much cheaper and I would like to save money if the barrels are interchangeable.

If i were to buy it would I need to sand or grind anything to make it fit?

On the 10/22 the magnum receiver is longer to accept the longer 22 Mag cartridge. If you are looking for an alternate round for the 10/22 go for a 17 HM2. Same size, length, as a 22 lr. I think that Green Mountain makes barrels and bolts for the barrel swap.

why is the "bang" so much louder if a 22lr is shot through a mag rifle?

Probably due to gas leakage.
A .22 LR case has to expand or bulge significantly to seal the chamber. Some high-pressure gas undoubtedly leaks past the poor case seal before that bulge can occur.

As to the OP's question.

No way you can shoot .22WMR in a .22LR 10/22, nor can you put a .22WMR barrel on one.

First of all, they will not fit in the rotary magazine.
Second of all, as noted, the .22WMR version of the 10/22 Ruger made for a short while used a larger steel receiver, a heavier bolt, and a longer magazine.

And even after all that, I was not too successful.

bang could be the sonic boom of a high speed 22lr. Not sure how quick a 22 mag is going.

Well it's going a whole lot faster then a .22LR.

Especially one fired in a .22 Mag chamber!

Approximate velocity's:
.22LR standard = 1,050 FPS.
.22 LR High-Speed = 1,250 FPS.
.22 Stinger type = 1,500 FPS.
.22 Magnum standard = 1,910 FPS.
.22 Mag H-V type = 2,000 FPS.

An unfired LR case can fit inside a fired(Marlin # 25).22 mag case. There is quite a difference in diameter. (about .003.)
Did some shooting with a couple of the the H&R "both" revolvers years ago,and those "magnum" bbls would not shoot LRs worth a darn.

Your onto something here buddy, don't give up yet.

To answer your question. Yes, there are differences in the barrels. A 22 Winchester Magnum uses a 22 CENTERFIRE bore dimension. A 22 Long Rifle barrel is made to RIMFIRE bore dimensions.

You can use a RIMFIRE barrel for the 22WM. it requires a reamer with a slightly different throat geometry and pilot though. Typically, guns built this way shoot rather well as it "scrunches" down on the bullet a bit better.

Now with what your trying to do, it's not going to work without some serious work in a lathe.

If you want a 22 barrel for a 10/22 that will shoot decent (well) and is affordable, find this guy:

Bo Clerke
Clerke Industries in Raton New Mexico.

Holley, his daughter will more than likely answer the phone. Very nice lady.
Bo is about 99.9 years old and is a great ol salt who's been around this stuff a very very very long time.:D:D

good luck.
