I'm thinking of putting one of the small micro-dots (JPoint, Fastfire, etc..) on my 686. Is there a short weaver rail available for the S&W line of revolvers? Putting a tiny red dot on a long standard scope rail seems tacky to me. More rail than scope :uhoh:
I have seen some specific to the red dot mounts available but was wondering if anybody made a short weaver rail for a more universal fit to multiple micro dot types.

There are several Weaver style mounts that are made for late model S&W's.
I have one on a K-38 and a 625. I have read that a Ruger 10/22 mount will work.
After you figure where you want to mount the scope, cut the excess off.
I have a Marvel 22 conversion with a rail, I cut it off where it wasn't needed to give easier access to the chamber.
I have seen some people use red dot scopes with only one scope ring. That would allow you to do some drastic reduction on the mount.
I like the original Weaver rings for my scopes. They work very well and are lower then many others.

Here is a 586 with A Weigand mount (http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=56758&d=1176851443). It has some room to cut some off from the front and the rear.

Reviving this because 1) I'm taking my 686-1M to my gunsmith tomorrow (since there are no tapped holes under the rear sight) so I can mount a Burris Fastfire II, and, 2) I see the last poster (Walkalong) happens to be logged in right now!

So, am I to understand that one can hack down the length of a Weigand S&W mount? Since the original rear sight is about 2 1/2" long, and the Fastfire needs 1 3/4" of Weaver rail, then I can ask the smith to fit them.

Any gotcha's to this (besides that the mount will be too short for a true scope if I want to go that way later)?

Yes. You can hack off some of the mount. They are long for the two ring set up for scopes, but many red dots do not need all that length. The screws go into the top strap. Anything forward of that can be removed.

Oh, another option is the J-Point (http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/BrowseProducts.aspx?tabid=14&categoryid=19240&categorystring=10611***19789***&brandId=1069) which uses a mount that screws into the rear sight holes.

Thinking of doing the same with a 1985 624.

I've read the front screw hole location will vary on my older, non D&T frame, does it ever interfere with drilling and tapping the front screw hole for the scope mount?

Several years ago, I made my own for a Taurus 22mag. Had to drill, tap the top strap, then rumaged tru my Weaver mounts until I found a good fit. Cut it off, drilled it and mounted. Have had JPoints, other micro-dots with good sucess. This is a True-Glo.

I have been told by another long time revolver shooter, that a Weaver 10/22 mount used to be the hot ticket for mounting on S&W K frames.
You might consider checking this route out, if you going to cut the mount anyway.

At one time J-Point made an adapter for their reflex red dot sight which replaced the adjustable rear sight of S&W revolvers.
