Not Another Home Defense Thread

Many gun owners, including myself, have become increasingly aware of the probability that scientists have successfully cloned and released Velociraptors into the North American heartland. That being said, many of us have chosen to arm themselves accordingly to combat these predators. My question is what gun have you chosen (realistically, of course) to defend your family against this imminent threat?
No, really, my home is concrete block construction (cinder block exterior walls, drywall interior). It is just me, the wife and the dog. That being said, I am not worried if a round would be travelling through interior walls, but I do not want exterior wall penetration; I live in a fairly crowded suburb (< 1 acre lot sizes). I have a 9mm pistol in my night table; my query being what type of carbine caliber would fit this bill? Additionally, what firearm fire said caliber?
Current Prospects:
HK USC .45
Lever Action .357
Tantal in 5.45x39
Pre-empting the obligatory apples/oranges comments: I know this is a $300-$1500 spread. I know you hate H&K. I know CAI makes less than desireable firearms. I know what an AR-15 is. I know most 5.45 ammunition (surplus) is corrosive. The only criteria for the firearm I am looking for is that it fires a round that will disable an intruder without ridiculous amounts of over penetration.

The best carbine for HD remains the AR-15 in 16" trim. They are light and handy, easy to control, and the 5.56mm round is less likely to leave a structure than handgun rounds. On that note, the 5.45x39mm has very similar characteristics and would be a fine choice. Only downside is volume: Rifles fired indoors are EXTREMELY loud.
USC's are bulky for what they are, suffer from handgun ballistics, and are limited to 10 round magazines.
The .357 levergun isn't a bad choice, but not the best, either.

The best carbine for HD remains the AR-15 in 16" trim huh?!
I stand firm on my m-1 carbine like above just an opinion though

My primary is my 870 loaded with #4 buck. My back (and my wife's primary) is my M-1 carbine.
For the Raptors, however, I will use 00 with slugs in the sidesaddle, and I would prefer an AR-10 with ballistic-tip ammo. Right now the closest equivalent I have is an SKS.

See, the thing is, I get to plan ahead and have whatever I want available to 'grab'.
Thank you for your nontribution.
Handgun ballistics don't seem to be an issue, i.e. this is indoors. Similiarly, my ears will be least of my concerns in a home invasion.
Stopping power without over penetration!
I will take the shotgun suggestion into advisement; but, still, .223? Is there a 9mm carbine option?

Movie velociraptors or real ones?

You have confused the movies with paleontology.
Velociraptor (commonly shortened to 'raptor') is one of the dinosaur genera most familiar to the general public due to its prominent role in the Jurassic Park motion picture series. In the films it was shown with anatomical inaccuracies, including being much larger than it was in reality and without feathers.
A successful cloning would yield a turkey with teeth.
I could probably get by with a size 12 boot, an irritated 35 pound American Eskimo dog and maybe an airsoft for backup. A nylon tent should prove sufficient so far as shelter goes.

Well, the SPAS-12 wouldn't be a bad choice such as in this situation...

But it depends I would use either an AR or AK for midrange distance then when they are close bust out that tactical 870 or mossy 535 then use the ka-bar.

Actually you are completely wrong, whether the perp is a velociraptor, zombie, or plain old bad guy, ballistics matter, even indoors. It's pretty simple math really, any rifle cartridge has much more stopping ability than any (normal SD cartridge) pistol round. You might want to give that a little thought.
Having said that I have a pistol (two actually) in the nightstand, not an AR under the bed. So I have to use the pistol(s) to fight my way to the long guns.

I'd go with the 5.45 polish tantel! Those suckers are nice! Recoil is moderate compared to its 7.62 cousin. 5.45 is a little cheaper than others as well. Nasty wound the 5.45 hp leaves!

OK - good luck with that.

well, I'd have to say something in 12 guage, preferably a remington or a benelli. Loaded with OO buck. Failing that, either an M1 carbine or a large caliber handgun (with a light, if possible). Pretty standard answer to a pretty standard question, really.
Oh, and if velociraptors are actually a serious concern, I'd actually suggest something more along the lines of reinforced doors/windows and a couple of rifles in .416 Rigby. Just sayin'.

A Hi-Point may not be pretty but should be plenty to defend your home against mamalian bi-pedal invaders. You already have the ammo.
For the Velociraptor variety, use a turkey gun.

i pretty much agree with interwebguy, a would get a remington 870 or a bennelli rather than a ar15 , grab my wife, barricade somewhere and wait for the cavalry to arrived. if you were going to search through the house for the bad guys, which in dont recommend you do (unless someones life is in danger) then id go with a high capacity pistol in either .40 or .45 ie glock or HK usp, doing room clearances with a shotgun or even a 16in rifle is a pain in the arse especially clearing tight corners in rooms or areas that are condensed with furniture and alike. if you really want a longarm for this then find one with the shortest barrel possible.
