Hi,

I have a 20 year old 870 wingmaster. It was my old man's gun but he recently gifted it to me. I don't have much experience with this thing. It works fine but one thing concerns me, and that the side-to-side play in the stock fore end/fore grip. I'd say it rotates a solid 1/8" side to side. Don't get me wrong, it still chambers rounds just fine, but is this play an indicator of impending failure, or is it normal for 870's? Thanks.

Normal.

As long as the forend wood is not moving, relative to the forend metal, no sweat. If it is, you need to tighten the sleeve nut very carefully so you don't screw anything up.

Thanks. I actually took it by a shop yesterday and they too said it was normal and not to worry as long as it's chambering the rounds ok. I guess my 870 is in good shape after all, character marks aside.
