I have decided to try a pair of the Royal Robbins 5.11 Tactical Pants and have a question about the sizing. Do these tend to run large, small, or roughly true to size? Since I have to order these without being able to try a pair on for size I want to try to guess right the first time.

I've found that the 5.11s run a little large. I picked up a couple pair in a 34" waist which is what I wear in blue jeans; that tends to be tight when wearing IWB. With the Royal Robbins, they're just right.

Yep, they run large and long.

If you're getting it direct from them they have some casual stuff on sale as well.

RR junkie here, since Levi's left a bad taste in my mouth, I went RR, figuring that a clothing company that sells clothing at gun stores can't be half bad :)

I wear 33x30 501 jeans and they fit well. I wear 32x30 RR 511 and they are very loose!

Does anyone know of a website that has any of the RR pants and vests in stock? Since RR went international, I have not been able to find any place that stocks them.

"Does anyone know of a website that has any of the RR pants and vests in stock?"

I asked this question because I saw them in the latest Brigade Quartermasters catalog. Try

I suggest you go to New York Clothiers (http://www.newyorkclothiers.com) and place your order through them.

Keep in mind that their web site isn't the best place to shop. Search for my previous thread covering my problems.

If you need a direct e-mail address please let me know, and I will give you one. Make sure you check directly with them after you place your order. Their web system dropped my order twice.

They are a good place to deal with, just have a crappy web based shopping center.

There's a place that carries them for $30, but they don't have a website. The guy used to post on here by the name of COHIBA. It's something like Police Supply or something like that. Maybe someone can help me out. I bought several pair of pants and shorts from them, as well as some firearms related stuff. They gave great service.

I just order a pair from BQM. It took me a little bit to get to exactly what I wanted (their webpage showed the black pair and I wanted khaki), but they are on order and I asked for expedited delivery. $39.99. We will see. I want them to wear to my NRA Instructor course to see how they do on the range.

TechBrute - IIRC, Cohiba is still online, although I personally don't recall seeing him lately. Maybe he will see this and respond.

Regarding the RR vest, the Wilderness store might have them and have the holsters for them as well.

COHIBA sells the RR 5.11 pants for $36, that's where I am ordering my next batch from. He can be reached at Cohiba (psequip@bellsouth.net)

Like Skunkabilly, I think I am a RR junky now, but I won't rule out changing if we can get Sportif to make the 911 pants again.

I think you will be happy with the RR pants, they fit my every need.

Actually, IIRC, he sells them for $30 + $6 shipping. That makes a difference if you order more than one pair, because it's not $6 each for shipping.

I sent him an e-mail to confirm his pricing.

Cohiba tells me they are $36.00 per pair, plus shipping.

Still, that's lower than anywhere else I have found.

You might also try searching Ebay for RR wear. 5.11 stuff shows up a lot, and anso 5.12 gear which is dressier and not quite so "tactical" looking. Got a NWT pair of olive 5.12 cargo pants for 25$.

Tried EBay, nothing really worth buying.

I agree on the 5.12s. They are excellent pants, I prefer them over the 5.11s for a number of reasons.

Well, I just got my 5.11's and first impression tells me that i am going to like them. The fit seems good, albeit a bit looser than similar sized dockers or jeans. That is good. Now to break them in.

Well, I have worn my Royal Robbins pants for an extended weekend and have the following observations.

They DO run large. I bought my normal waist size, 38", and they are very loose on me. In fact I could easily wear an IWB holster. However they are comfortable and feel good.

The pockets are deep, almost too deep. At least the rear pockets. I can carry my 2" Charter Arms Undercover in a pocket holster in my right front pocket and it stays put. I am still trying to figure out how to best use all of the other pockets without weighing the entire outfit down too much.

For winter wear with an IWB holster I think these will work. However I think that I will try a 36" pair to see if they fit better.

Thanks for all the input.

being the lazy bum that I am, I wear the same pair of black RR Tac Pants to work everyday. I wash them once a week. I've worked at this job for 2 months now, and worn the same pants every day but two, and no one has said anything about it :)
I also have the RR shortsleeve, tac vest, and 5.11 Shorts. All are top notch, I try not to wear them all at once to avoid "tactical poser syndrome". In fact this weekend I intentionally wore a green shirt so I wouldn't be wearing all black :)

RR's own.

Good Evening All-

Now, if R.R. would finally just make the belt loops wider to easily accomodate a 1.75" Wilderness Instructor Belt or Special Operations Equipment Rigger's Belt, we would have it made in the shade!

I just received my first pair of 5.11's in the mail today, and here's the info:

I usually wear a 34/32 in jeans, with IWB being a little snug. I ordered a 32/30 in the Royal Robbins', and IWB is more comfortable than with the jeans. The length is about the same. I could probably carry a second gun IWB, and still have more room than in the jeans.

So I guess what I'm saying is to order them in a size smaller than what you'd normally wear.

Also, the pockets are very deep, and conceal my 637 with Nemesis very well.

Edited to add: I wear a 1.75 inch Wilderness Instructor belt with these, and it fits easily, with no forcing/bunching of the loops.

What strength belt? I have the Combat Shooters Model (wanted the extra weight for my Beretta 92G with 2 extra mags) and it gets real hard to get thru the loop at times.

Deeeeeeeep pockets are great--for stuffing AR15 mags and shotshells. But if you carry a BUG sometimes it's so low it'll go below the end of your concealment garment and the muzzle may print.

For whatever it's worth, 5.11 has split from Royal Robbins and is now its own company.

The Wilderness belt I use is the 5-stitch added stiffness model. From what I understand, the one you have Skunk has an insert?

That may make it a little too thick for the loops.

QuarterBoreGunner

I have the Wilderness Instructors (stiff insert) belt and it will fit in the 5.11 belt loops- barely.

Skunkabilly

the Combat Shooter's Model is the one with the insert and QBG is right, it baaarely fits.

Has anyone tried the Cabela's version of these? I compared the features and the only difference I could find was the missing 5.11 tag. Every single one of the listed features was the same right down to the pocket placement.

Clubsoda- The Cabela's version of the RR pants is called the Trailhiker pants. The features are exactly the same, down to pocket placement, but they are $10 a pair cheaper. I haven't gotten any yet, but plan to.

I use the Wilderness 5 stitch in my RR 5.11 and they fit fine. sticking two widths of the belt in one loop however would be impossible. so the 'hooky' velcro part goes over the outside of the loop.

...and all of my experience with "tactical" pants have been with BDUs. Can anyone give me a rundown of the advantages the 5.11-type pants may have over a traditional BDU? The only additional feature on the 5.11 pants that would appeal to me would be the elastic waistband.

Here's a general question on the 5.11s: Has anyone ever actually used the inside knee pad pocket on their pants?

Aside from stashing notes there to hide them from the home room teacher, I never have. Still think is a neato feature though.

Glockster35
December 29, 2003, 06:07 PM
QBG,

I asked the same thing a while back, and someone said they took a new pair of pants to a training camp, rigged a set of homemade pads and by the end of Day 1, there was a huge hole in the outside layer. Basically they worked the way they were intended, but didn't work to his satisfaction.

I do like the idea of using them for stashing notes and the like...hadn't thought if it myself.:neener:

QuarterBoreGunner
December 29, 2003, 06:16 PM
That's sort of what I though would happen. I've never used the pocket for knee pads (oh sure notes, Jelly Bellys, Powerbars, etc..) always used my tactical roller-blading knee pads... see 'cause they're black. But I appreciate the double thickness of material in that area... don't always have knee pads when I'm prowling the streets stopping crime.

TechBrute

I've had good luck with inserting mouse pads in the knees. It's not my standard wear, but if you know you're going to be crawling around or taking a knee much, you can take the edge off the impact.

TB, good idea, thanks.

Atek3, I also do that, so I can adjust my belt a smig looser when driving, I have it tight due to the shape of my body.

I just bought a pair today. 34x32 is what I wear in jeans and the RR's seem to be dead on, the elastic did strech a bit but still left me room to grow and use an IWB. I cannot IWB in my jeans.

For those of you who've worn the RR 5.11's, have you found that they shrink in the wash? I'm fairly tall, and getting tired of having every pair of khakis I buy shrink on me.

SJG26
January 7, 2004, 02:03 PM
I actually hoped they would shrink - I ordered 36x34's (usually wear 34x34) to leave room for IWB - hindsight tells me 34x34 would have been fine due to the elastic "give" in the waist.

I've tried the Cabella's brand of 5.11's, and I don't think they're worth saving $10-15 bucks on. The material is noticeably thinner, which means they're going to wear out sooner, and after one washing the fly button fell off the pants.

Another key difference: the mag pocket (a.k.a. 'knife-holder pocket') on the Cabella's is not big enough to hold a double-stack mag, but the 5.11 mag pocket is.

I'll pay more and stick with 5.11's. I think they'll last much longer.

After wanting some for a while and reading all the stuff here, I bought a pair of 5.11s last night at the local indoor range. Paid $49.99 + Tax. If I like them I'll order some more from BQM. There is also a guy that comes to some of the local IDPA matches and peddles the RR stuff from his tool truck. I'll have to check him out next season.

They do tend to run a little bigger and longer.

Best price I got was during Texas Army-Navy's "Take 50% off any one item in the store" sale. Most of their stuff is so overpriced that I can find it cheaper even at 50% off, but I scored a pair of 5.11s for $25.
