I'll be taking my CCW course here in a few week and I've come to the stunning conclusion that I don't have a suitable gun to actually carry.

My choices are a Dan Wesson .357, a S&W 945, a CZ-52, and a US revolver .32S&W.

Obviously, most of these (especially the US revolver) aren't the best for a CCW. Now, for about $175, I can replace the barrel and grip on the Dan Wesson, making it a 2" barrel with a small grip.

Does anyone have experience carrying the Dan Wesson, or am I better off purchasing another firearm for carry?

I have 2 Dan Wesson's and they are the equal of any S&W or Ruger. The frame will still be a bit large as a snub but it will be a reliable weapon...

Dan Wesson has an outstanding reputation and I would not disuade you from carrying it.

Having said that, the gun on your hip is a very personal decision. I have been carrying for many, many years.

Understand that what to carry is a fluid position. I started with a Combat Commander in 1980 and have a Detective Special on my hip right now. There were dozens in between.

This decision only represents your first step...who knows where it will lead?

I would feel perfectly comfortable carrying a Dan Wesson revolver. I'm actually considering getting one. It's between that, a Ruger, or another Smith; but that's for a different discussion.

It's not much trouble concealing a medium-sized revolver, if you dress around it. I've often carried a k-frame Smith (with a 6" barrel!) with no difficulty.

A Dan Wesson is a great cc piece if you are talking about the 15. If you don't own one already, consider saving and getting a "pistol pack" instead of a single barrel one and then buying another barrel. They are lots of fun, very accurate, and very well made. The only down side is a notoriously sloppy rear sight on the adjustable sight models.

I already have the Dan Wesson, though I believe it's the Model 14, as the rear sights are not adjustable. In fact, it was the first gun I bought.

The 14 is the fixed sight service model. I have a couple model 15s and love them. I use my snubby 15 for car carry on trips.

Also Millett has very nice target sights available for the 15 if someone doesn't like the factory sights.

I have personal knowledge of two that had timing problems. Might be prepared to replace either the hand or cylinder ratchet. Or both.
