Custom Built Rifle Appraisal

I have a 7mm Rem Mag which was custon built and was wondering what the best way to get it appraised is? Didn't know if just carting it down to the gun show was the best way or not. I know who built it and for whom and the other particulars. Thanks in advance.

If you are looking to insure it use the receipts for costs incured while building the gun, and schedule it specifically with the insurance agent's agreement.
Or any gun shop will tell you that its worth what the market will bear, at most $500, if you are lucky.

M.B. has it right. There are two types of rifles that will sell for what they cost to build, full out bench rest guns, and evil black rifles. Otherwise, you'll loose money. Here's how I know.
I had a 338-06 built on a nice Danzig mauser action. I got the mauser for free, but it needed a bolt, so in essence, it cost me $80.00. Barrel and stock (plastic) cost $200.00. Gunsmith work, true action, lap lugs, new safety, bent bolt handle, drill/tap mounts, trigger work, headspace and install barrel and refinish cost me $300.00 (bargain). Total with tax, $600.00. Go to Gunbroker or any shop and you'll most likely find factory .338 Winchester Magnum rifles for between $400.00 and $500.00. I just had to have a 338-06.
Bottom line with custom rifles (in standard calibers) is you pay more than they're worth. Use the reciepts for insurance replacement cost.

Not sure how they come up with costs-------was looking at one last weekend----Remington action----new barrel---and a nice stock---but it was nothing really all that special--the stock that is----well the whole rifle for that matter---anyway the dealer had it priced at $3300.
That's one of those pa-leaze give me a dang break moments---it wasn't much nicer than a standard BDL------I'd give them no more that $800 to $1000 for it.
$3300 gets me A LOT more rifle than that thing was.
So I'm not all that sure where they came up with that price.

Basically was just curious about how much this thing was worth. Not going to sell it so was pretty much just for kicks. Anyway, does the fact that it was built by a well known gun maker for a noteworthy person add anything to the value? I have to go check but I think the gun was made about 30 years ago.

My 6BR Savage breaks down like this...
$200 for the donor rifle
$150 to have the action trued
$075 for the take-off Shilen Select Match (about 400 rounds)
$150 for the chamber job (benchrest quality, tight neck, by Billy Stevens)
$200 for the stock
Sooo... About $800, and I'll be lucky to get $500 for it. It isn't a "competitive" benchrest rifle. But it'll drill 'em.
