I'm piggybacking on a previous thread here. I was thinking about buying a 1911 9mm just for fun shooting (I carry revolvers for defense). I have 2 questions:

1) Could anyone recommend a good 9mm 1911 for a decent price, say under $800?

2) I've heard the 9mm 1911 are inherently less reliable than 45's. Is there any truth to that? I'm not sure why that would be but I've heard it more than a few times. If I get comfortable and confident enough in the 1911 design to ever carry it that would be a nice thing to know. Thanks.

If you won't miss the grip safety how about a Star model B or BM?

Springfield has some 9mm offerings at that price range if you look around.
If you upped your spending limit by $100 (I know, easier said than done), or considered a .38 super, you'd probably have many more options to choose from.

Is .38 super ammo a lot more expensive than 9mm? I don't reload and with ammo getting silly expensive....
That's my only worry with .38 super.

unless you find a deal on a used 9mm, expect to pay +$850 for a 9mm 1911.

Springfield 9mm Loaded - $849 - $899
STI Trojan 9mm - $999
STI Ranger II - $999
Springfield EMP - $1049 - $1149
STI Edge - $1749

I have the Loaded, EMP and Edge. the only problem i had was on the EMP. the extractor had too much tension on it.
9mm 1911's should have zero tension on the extractor. the EMP is my CCW now.

Yeah, it is. It's more on par with .45ACP in price of ammo, which I'm guessing defeats your purpose. Sorry, I didn't know you were wanting a 9mm because of ammo costs, I just assumed there were other reasons.

From Whittaker's Guns (http://www.whittakerguns.com/):
1911 SERVICE MODEL LOADED 9mm 5in barrel w/2 mags & case
PI9134LP Stainless Steel w/Adjustable Sights $789.99
PX9130LP Stainless Steel $797.99

You might call them and see if they have any in stock...

J&G sales has RIA 1911's in 38 Super...I know the dims are a bit different, but with the rounds being fairly close to the same, why couldn't you convert a 38 Super into 9mm Para?

price on the pistol is 430 bucks...and I trust a RIA for reliability.

there have been a few threads around here about the conversion so do a search.

hope this helps

9mm 1911's should have zero tension on the extractor.

My Baer PII has enough tension to need the hook moved out to get it out of the tunnel. It runs great with the tension. I think it would need a bigger hook, or a lot less pad if it didn't have that much tension.

Tuning the extractor can be a bit of an issue on the 9mm 1911, but once set up mine is very reliable. Not in your price range.

About covers it, although I did not check prices.

The Springfield 9MM Loaded can be had used in great shape for $750 or less if you keep an eye out.

The STI 9MM guns are very interesting to me, as are the Fusion ones, but it will be around $1000 to $1200.

I have an EMP and it is great, but is was around $1050 if I remember correctly.

I had a Kimber Tactical Pro, and it was great, but it was an aluminum frame gun and I sold it in favor of an all steel frame for range work.

Kimber (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=122721195) - just for a price reference.

My uncle just bought a Kimber 1911 in 9mm as his new competition gun. I've shot it a few times, ands its a really sweet gun, but firing a 1911 in 9mm just doesn't feel right imo.

I've read many good things about RIA 1911's. J&G is only 1.5 hours from my house. Maybe, for that price, I should give a .38 super some more consideration. But then, I might as well just get a .45. The SA loaded 9's look very sweet. Maybe I'll patiently (yeah right) look for a nice used one. Thanks guys. Good stuff.

Gutsy thread. I was thinking about asking the the same thing except for 1911 .45 ACP. I Googled this forum and got about a bazillion posts about the topic and thought better of it. Problem is that wading through all the threads and posts would take forever. Wonder if the moderators would mind if I asked?
