One Shot. One Kill.

Three different tools.

http://www.remington.com/pdfs/turkeytarget.pdf

Hunting season is upon us. One accurate shot from a cold barrel is what you need to take your game quickly and ethically.

This month's match uses a turkey head as a target background, but the large circle is roughly the size of the kill zone on a large game animal like a whitetail deer. (Please note that I am in no way condoning the illegal use of pistols and rifles on turkey -- it's just too hard to fit a deer on an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper.)

NO BENCHES OR ARTIFICIAL RESTS ALLOWED. You can shoot prone, sitting, kneeling or standing. No steady sticks, trees, partner's backs, etc. I know it's best to use some sort of rest when hunting, but trees, bipods, steady sticks and shooting stands are not always available when the shot presents itself.

5 classes to include all kinds of firearms:

Rifle Classes -- 50 Yards. 80 points for shots in the large outer circle. 100 points for shots in the red inner circle.
R1 - Scoped
R2 - Non-scoped

Pistol Classes -- 15 Yards. 80 points for shots in the large outer circle. 100 points for shots in the red inner circle.
P1 - Scoped
P2 - Non-scoped

Shotgun Class - Use any shot size and choke you like. 50 Yards. 10 points for each hole in the red inner circle. ZERO points for anything outside the red circle.
S1 - Any shotgun

To allow more participation, you can use any caliber from .22/.410 on up to 50 BMG/10 ga., but please don't go deer or turkey hunting with your .22 or .410.

THREE entries per person allowed in 3 different classes.

There may be ties this month, so the overall winner will be the best combined score of rifle/pistol/shotgun.

Please post your scores here on this thread with the following information:

Score ____/100

This looks like a job for my trio of .44 Mags:

Marlin 1894 (Unscoped rifle)
SSK Contender (Scoped Pistol)
Redhawk (Unscoped Pistol)

Probably won't be able to do it for a couple weeks though.

Kamicosmos -- Sounds like a great trio of deer hunting tools!

What kind of grips are on your Redhawk? I like mine, but the rubber Pachmayr grips kind of "grab" the web of my hand, so long strings of shooting get a little uncomfortable.

Good luck!

ROTR,
I notice that you say to submit scores on "this thread". I submitted targets and scores on Sept.'s match on the "mail-in match" e-mail address. Was this wrong or is it only wrong beginning in Oct.? Please clarify for Oct.s match use of sling in any position. Thanks for getting some guns out of the closet that rarely got used. I enjoy these "Postals" Quantrill

I submitted targets and scores on Sept.'s match on the "mail-in match" e-mail address.

Sending your entry to mailinmatch@yahoo.com works also.

As far as use of slings goes. In the last 2 months, we were shooting something close to a Highpower Service Match -- which does not allow use of slings when shooting while standing.

Unless otherwise noted, slings are OK to use as they are typically part of your rifle. (I know, bipods can be too, but allowing them makes the classes too broad). According to Jeff Cooper and others, there is really no reason a sling should help your shooting if you do not have the ground, knee or something for support, but I find that a sling makes me more confident -- although I usually add support with a kneeling or sitting position if hunting where there are no trees.

Maybe Steve Smith or others could tell us why slings are not allowed for the standing portion of Highpower Service Matches.

Believe it or not, still have the factory wood grips on it!

I tried the houges, but didn't like them. The finger grooves weren't exactly where my fingers wanted to go, and I don't like the extra rubber they put behind the trigger. Just made the gun incredibly uncomfortable for me to shoot.

I've heard good things about the Pachmeyers though. I tried a pair that was on a .44mag Blackhawk, but they seemed to big. And yeah, that SuperGripAction was a bit much.

But for now, I'm using the factory ones. In fact all of my firearms wear factory grips now that I think about it. Maybe I'm some kind of freak or something, or just happen to have a good pair of Factory Size Hands! :)

Well -- It looks like I made this month's match too easy. I am glad that we have such good shots out hunting here on THR.

For tie-breakers, we already have some entrants getting 100 on all three entries. The first tie-breaker will go to anyone getting 100 on rifle, pistol and shotgun.

So..even if you've entered three rifle or pistol entries, I will allow an additional entry or two to make sure you get into all three classes.

For the second tiebreaker, I may have to make a somewhat subjective call and use scoped vs. non-scoped as the tie-breaker.

This is all for fun, so please get out there and shoot that turkey target! I'm looking forward to seeing if my shotgun gets 100/100.

I went shooting with a friend of mine yesterday. We had a blast. Burned about 600 rounds of ammo in various calibers. After finally getting my AR sighted in I decided to use it for scoped rifle and use the Mosin for open sights. I used my trusty Witness for the pistol class. All shooting was done standing unsupported.
Being the match this month is based on single shots I won't post my target scans unless someone really cares enough to see them. (saving bandwidth)

I hope to try the shotgun before the month is out but so far.

You have two extra weekend days to get out and shoot!

I will not get a chance to compile this month's entries until Monday, November 3, so get out and shoot a turkey target this weekend.

Remember, ties will go to entries that include high scores in rifle, pistol and shotgun.

ACP230 wins it all this month!

ACP230 was the only entry shooting a rifle, shotgun and a pistol. Even though he shot a zero with his first shotgun attempt (nice try with the second shotgun entry btw), he met the requirements for the tie-breaker -- congratulations ACP230!

DeputyVaughn and Duckfoot scored 300/300 in three non-shotgun entries each, so they both win Mr. Congeniality for some outstanding shooting.

There were a lot of 100s. Nice shooting this month THR Members!

Special kudos go out to ACP230 and El Rojo for having the guts to report 0/100 on one shot for each. Honesty in an internet community shows off how much class you guys have.

Quantrill -- I could not open the file you sent me. I assumed you shot your High Standard and got 100 -- please correct me if I'm wrong.

YTD results and a November match are coming tomorrow. I'm going to bed. Nice shooting everyone!

Ooops. Hey, Burn me down and I did shoot a shotgun target and pistol targets. I was so depressed I didn't bother counting them up, but he at least got one or two on the shotgun. He also shot handgun, but got a big fat zero. That means that he would have still lost. Sorry next time I will report everything instead of being so bummed out we just sort of forgot about the handgun and shotguns. My fault.

Thanks ROTR for your continued leadership. Remember if you are getting burned out, delegate the match to someone else for the month I am busy with school and work, but could take the time to set up a match for the month.

And we ought to start thinking about maybe making this a yearly tally. What does everyone think about ending it at the end of December. True I think we started in February or March and it wouldn't be a full year, but I think that is best to have yearly winners and give any new people a chance to catch up on the running tally. That way we can have a 2004 winner and then a 2005 winner and on and on.

ROTR,
Sorry it gave you a problem. I'll try to do better in the future (read, my wife will send it). Actually, I used a Browning Challenger this time. It is the old, all steel model made in Belgium. It was my first "target" pistol and I rarely use it anymore so I thought I would see if it was still zero'd to 15 yards and it was. Nice to get the old gun out again for which I thank you and these "postal" matches. I did not submit any other scores this month. I made it out to the range with a AR-15A2 but the first shot never exited the barrel. I have it home and will try again because I rarely get that rifle out either. Quantrill

So we'll have a yearly total and an awards show after the December match.

I'll finish doing this throughout 2003, but maybe we can each take a month or two for next year.
