? on mossberg 835 choke. and steal shot. the coke is a ulti-full .695 12 Ga.accu-mag x-factor turkey. can i shot win. expert hi- velocity steel shot 3- 1/2- 1-1/4- bb. i want to shoot snows. maybe theirs a better barrel i should think about?

I have a Mossberg 835 with a 28" ported barrel with a Mod 750 choke. I shoot 3 1/2 steel BB. It does real well on geese.

mine has a 20 inch. its a turkey gun. id like the small Barrel feel. and am going to try on snows. my worry was about the choke being to tight and hurting something or hurting my self with barrel explo.

When duck hunting...people usually don't shoot steel out of anything choked more than modified.

Shooting steel in chokes smaller than modified blows holes in your pattern.

If you're going to shoot a full choke with steel, then the choke manufacturer will say it's ok. These chokes usually look like they have holes built into them...kind of like a flash suppressor at the end of an M16.

I think tru-lock makes a full choke that is designed to shoot steel as are many other.

I use modified or improved cylinder with heavy shot or steel over decoys.

Steve is exactly right on this. The Moss. 835 came from the factory (at least mine did) with a choke marked "extra full steel". This choke was specifically made for large (BB and larger) steel shot. All of the 835 chokes from Mossberg will be marked either "lead shot only" or "steel shot". Shoot steel only in those marked for steel.

Othere companies don't always mark for steel compatability. If that is ever the case, don't shoot steel in anything tighter than modified.

You can only shoot steel through that choke for about 1 round. Then it goes BOOM.

The other posters are correct about the extra-full steel choke.

Most 835's that I've seen came with five chokes: (I own three bought new)

XX-Full lead only turkey choke
X-Full Steel/Full Lead
Full Steel/Mod Lead
Mod Steel/Impr. Lead
Impr. Steel/Skeet Lead
...Or something very close to that...As a general rule the steel will shoot a smaller pattern through the same choke.

A Modified choke or even Improved Modified would be a much better choice. Most Swans are taken under 20yds IME.

Sorry, when I first read your post I thought you were Swan hunting. I shoot IC for geese with BB or BBB steel out to 40yards.

its had one round of steal bb fired through it. it dosent look like their was any damage to the barrel. i will get the proper choke before i shoot any more bb through it. tango echo ya kinda got me worried about the next time i go to shoot it. like i said it dosent look damaged any were on the barrel

Are any chokes that are available for the 835 able to be safely used with slugs?

Edit: Further searching here shows that you need a new barrel entirely to do so, am I correct?

Large shot, including BB will pattern tighter in a given choke. Modified actually gives patterns that are near 'full' with the large shot sizes. So not only is it not safe, its not necessary to use the super tight chokes.

Yes. With 835's you need a slug barrel - the stock one is over-bored.

I shoot steel through a modified, and hevishot through either modified or I/C in mine.
