Removed my barrel to clean it, unscrewed the nipple...but I also see some sort of threaded screw in the nipple port. Looks like it might come out with an allen wrench?

What does this screw do? Should I remove it when cleaning?

Thanks for the help!

Guvnor, If the screw will come out do take it out and make sure you use a good antiseize on it when you replace it. Breechplug lube comes to mind.
Being able to remove it for a more thorough cleaning is one good reason for the drum screw. Another good reason to have it is if you have a missfire its a good place to add powder to clear the misfire.

Macmac, You're right there. Chances are that if the gun has been fired at all the drum screw will be tough or impossible to remove.
Guvnor, check out my latest thread on the homebrew penetrating oil.
As I said being able to remove that screw to get a more direct access to the spark path is nice to have.

Yup, MY Lyman Trade rifle has that screw & that was the first thing I did was use some 3M Anti Sieze on it & the Cone to make life easier.

I'll remove the clean out screw "as it's called" about every other cleaning on mine.

Yea I was able to get it out. Would some bore butter on the threads help prevent it from getting stuck? Or should I get proper anti-seize?

Thanks for the help.

You should probably use the anti-seize. Also I replaced the original screw with a Philips (5mmx0.8) because my original is now at the bottom of my septic tank. It's all I could get at the time, but it is much easier to work with, and I blued it, so it is not that noticable. While I was at the hardware store, I also bought a kitchen seive to clean my small parts. Live and learn.

Yes, use Gorilla Grease or other thread anti-sieze. Do not use Bore Butter.
