Just purchased a Polish AK74 Tantal: General questions

Hey everyone

Upon my moving out of NJ and into a free state, I had to celebrate. I recently purchased an AK74.

To my dismay, I have found that magazines and ammo are hard to come by when compared to its cousin the 47. However, I am in the process of stocking up its food.

So my basic questions are mainly about the mags.

I see that "pro-mag" AK74 magazines are readily available. I ordered a few that were labeled as Polish Tantal Mags. There were others listed as plain ole 74 mags. Does this mean that the Polish Tantal 74 only accepts a certain type of magazine? Would it be interchangable with the bulgarian, romanian and east german varities of magazines?

Also. If anyone has had experience with this gun, I would like to hear your thoughts.

Wish me luck!

Thanks.

Don't know about mags, but in my experience, 5.45x39mm ammo is quite common and usually easy to find. However, everything is in short supply right now, due to fears over possible new gun legislation. People are buying up everything they can and it's hard to find many common calibers. However, I'm sure supply will catch up soon.

All 5.45 AKs use the same magazine type.

Yup, but make sure you and your dealer know the difference between .223 mags and 5.45x39 mags. While they fit the guns, they don't generally work reliably with the close but incorrect ammo.

Don't waste your money on Pro Mags (aka PMI).

Be aware that the cheap spam can surplus 5.45x39 ammo is almost always corrosive.

After "He Who Shall Not Be Named" was elected it's hard to find anything.

A couple of good websites to watch.

Everyone's out of stock right now.

There's always ak74 mags for sale on gunbroker. But the prices crazy on most of the auctions.

+1 on getting good, honest ex-Communist issue mags for the AK-74. There's not any US manufacturer making 74 magazines I'd spend money on even for range mags.

Purdy. I've always liked wire stocks.
