Why doesn't Ruger put a longer barrel on mini-14?

Just to QUIET it down a bit. Maybe this is wrong forum cause I'm wondering if it might be that with their direct impingement gas bleed off, the bullet would still be in the barrel and pressures might be too high with longer barrel.

I love the mini but hate the racket.

No gas problem putting a longer barrel on the gun. I doubt it would quiet the gun any though. It's meant to be a carbine. You might gain some velocity, but the gun sells like is so there is no demand for a longer barrel. The current trend is towards SHORTER barrels or more ACCURATE guns. Putting a longer barrel on an inherintly inaccurate design seems counter to good business sense.

I just wish they'd put a better barrel on it and sell factory 10 rounders. :cuss:

I have a 182-series Mini-14 that I put one of the Eagle HK-style front sight/flash hider combos on, and it works well to hide the 8" - 10" fireball. It also gives a vastly improved sight picture.

Add a 20" fluted match barrel...

And a Harmonic Stabilizer....

but I bought the thing for what it is. I have no complaints on accuracy as I never expected better than 3 MOA and that is about what mine is.

It will skip a bucket out to 200-300 yards and I wouldn't want to be in its path.

I have a match rifle to hit with and a mini to blast with. It is what it is and that's fine with me.

I just like quiet. And more range than a 22LR.

But I guess I really use more 22LR than anything else anyhow.

My mini is my "house gun" for when it's the 6th house down the block.

<sigh> I understand our Norwegian friends can use a little device called a silencer (or supressor) to tone things down a bit...

So can Americans. You can put a suppressor on a pre-ban Mini if you want. Just takes a little paperwork and $$$.

It's only 1.5 inches shorter than an M16.:)

Someone had the barrel shortened to 16.5" and it made it stiffer and more accurate. Perhaps that's a better solution.

You can put one (a suppressor) on a post-ban too.

The apparent consensus of multitudes of discussions about the Mini-14 is that the most benefit would obtain from a somewhat thicker barrel...

-Or a slower-turned-down barrel. People have had aftermarket barrels made to the same external dimensions that shot way better than the factory tube, so much of the discussion centers on how fast Ruger turns the barrels down.
.....
Of course, if you go with a straight-profile, there's no turning-down to do too fast, which is another solution I suppose. I had heard that the mini-30's don't suffer nearly as much from this problem.....
-When I had a SS ranch 14, it functioned well but shot about typical accuracy for minis. That is, my $450 mini shot much worse than a $700 Colt Sporter, and about as well as a $150 Chinese/Norinco SKS. Rather disappointing, really. A scope is wasted on a mini-14 unless you also put on a better barrel.

Why not try a .22WMR semi auto? Ruger and Remington both make them, and they'll probably cost the same or less than a replacement tube for your Mini. They've got more punch then a 22lr, but a lot less noise than a .223. They'll probably be more accurate too. :)

They are finally making some decent 22Mag rifle ammo. I picked up some ammo that had 30gr Sierra bullets in a 22 Mag round. The stuff does 2200fps. :what:
