Do I install swivel studs in a Rem. synthetic stock differently from a wood stock?

The only difference that I can think of is that many synthetic stocks have hollow spaces ... you would want to take care NOT to try to put a swivel into a hollow, as the plastic might be too thin to support the load there.

Can you remove the recoil pad and look inside for a thick spot?

Good thought, will try that. Was also thinking I may have to use some kind of epoxy or glass bedding if stock is too thin.

Probably would not work on the buttstock, but on a hollow foreend I have seen folks use those little metal clips they sell in auto supply stores that have a hole in the center with little flaps to engage the screw threads. They are made for sheet metal screws, but appear to work just fine for machine screws and they spread the strain out enough that there is no problem with a thin stock.
