The new or rather first edition of Black Powder Magazine (http://www.blackpowdermagazine.com/) (formerly Black Powder Revolver) is online. Now that we're starting our 4th year, we changed the name and expanded the scope. This now allows me to play with more things and still get away with calling it work. We hope to cover all things black powder including BP cartridge arms. The old URL www.blackpowderrevolver.net still works so any previous links should work. Check it out and as always comments, ideas and articles are always welcome.

As always excellent Article. I like the 1853 enfield you did a very good job on it. Now i am debating on getting one.

The biggest problem with 3 of the rifles I got from IMA was the wood. I had never see worm holes in gun furniture before. Must have left a bad taste in the worms mouth...

Nice job BPR, a good read. The worm hole wood, was it stabilized?
Many of the things that give wood character like insects, fungus and bacteria leave the wood in poor condition. Filling all the pores of the wood with a epoxy resin makes it much stronger than normal untreated wood. I think it would make a good stock.

Minwax has a word hardener that works well. It is supposed to penetrate the wood then harden giving a stronger base for other repairs. I used it inside the lock cut out and on the fore end of the stock under the barrel. It dried looking like a clear epoxy so I didn't want to use it where it would be seen.
