I'm looking for a 150gr. bullet with a decent charge. Even $10 a box is just way too much money. Anybody got a source of decent practice ammo out there? No, I don't think that I can turn my 30-30 into a cheap plinker, nor do I want to, but if anybody knows some more reasonably priced good ammo out there, please let me know.

WonderNine, check out www.natchezss.com I got some 30-30 made by Federal that they call their Estate line of ammo. They use Spear "Hot Cor" bonded bullets. I think I paid ~$7.00/box. I got the 170grn version. I put some thru my Marlin 36C with very good results. I'm gonna try some of their .308 stuff next.

I make 30/30 for about $4 per box. Otherwise, Walmart.

I hate all of you guys...i have to pay 19.99 for a box of 30-30....and thats a steal. Either its time to learn how to reload or switch to something more economical. Paying the price to live in paradise i guess......

Alas, no milsurp for .30-30. I do recommend reloading, though. The cartridge is easy to reload and for a good modern rifle (esp. a bolt action like the Remington 788), the .30-30 can be loaded pretty hot. For a box magazine action, pointed bullets can be used also, but not in a tubular magazine rifle.

Paniolo808/Dustin,

Where in the world do you live to have to pay $19.99 for a box of 30-30 ammo?................( And I thought stuff was expensive when I lived in Alaska.)

To answer the original question. Wal Marts and all the other "Marts" that still carry ammo should be having their shelves well stocked for the up coming hunting season.

Last time I checked a local Mal Marts had 30-30 at around $9 and .243 for about $10 per box. Other common calibers such as 270 and 30-06 were in the $12-$14 range. The problem with mail order is that you have to figure in shipping and handling costs to get the product to your door.

Jeez, you must live in Hell if 30-30 is twenty bucks a box. Even in the back woods down here the only thing that costs twenty dollars a box is an off-color(at least for the area) caliber like 8X57 Mauser.
