What would you want for a zomie gun?

February 21, 2009, 04:33 AM
After watching Shawn of the Dead, my friends and I laughed and thought if we could pick just one gun to hunt and/or protect ourselves against hordes of the undead, what would we choose. I would probably use my Remington 870. I thought this would be a fun topic. What would you choose?

I'd go with a shotty too, but can you reload fast enough?

Maybe an AR...

(A pretty good survival primer whether you believe in the undead or not).
Since stopping this species of undead requires destruction of the brain & it appears one will be confronting many multiple assailaints I believe what is necessary is a round capable of reliable penetration of the skull (human bone being roughly 2-4 times as hard as seasoned oak) in an accurate, rapidly reloadable, very dependable weapon.Given these factors & my observations in 800+ rounds fired carbine classes I suggest the semi-auto AK system possibly equiped with a lazer sighting system.
A scoped major caliber bolt action rifle would be handy for thinning the approching herd if the situation warrents.
The slug-loaded shotgun would be effective but as Yosemite Sam states reloading would be an issue,& given that the AK will do anything the slugger will with a longer effecive range & faster reloading I'll vote against the shottie.
A blunt melee weapon (mace, war hammer, etc) would be handy for those "up close & personal" situations.

Can I mix this thread with the "what gun would you like to see made?"

Three words: Belt...Fed...Shotgun!!! :what::D

590M1, SKS, .30-40 Krag.

i certainly am not worried about "zombies". there are way to many real b.g.'s out there that require much more attention first. when the world is rid of b.g.'s, then i will worry about "zombies".

Not that I'm going to add to this ridiculous topic, but the AR works pretty darned well in Left4Dead. Good for distance head shots, great for attacking hordes, good for picking off Smokers that have snaked a buddy from distance. The semi-auto shotty is fantastic in close quarters and really does excellent area-denial, but it's useless at range, and takes way too long to reload. The AR-type seems to be the best overall (in the situation originally posted), offering both a realistic ranged effectivity, as well as high rates of fire for those "Oh Noes!" horde runs.

...but what the hell do I know? I play video games.

what about a .22 rifle? would it suffice for penetrating zombie skull?

my first choice would be an AK, with a blunt object or machete as a sidearm.

It is important also to consider the type of zombies you will be fighting.

If they are infected with the Rage Virus, as described in the documentary 28 Days, then remember that you will need to avoid exposure to Zombie blood, or else you too will become infected. In this situation, I think a shotgun will be a poor choice. It is simply too messy.

Also, you must take into consideration whether you are dealing with slow zombies or fast zombies. A hard recoiling, slow reloading weapon like a 12 gauge shotgun would again be a poor choice, as it will make rapid follow up shots, and rapid reloading more difficult.

As noted in the excellent reference The Zombie Survival Guide, the venerable M1 Carbine is considered by most experts to be the weapon of choice when dealing with Zombies. It has enough power to punch through Zombie skulls, reloads quickly, has little recoil, and doesn't cause the mess and potential hazard of splattering Zombie blood everywhere. Additionally, it is light and handy, so it can be maneuvered easily in the places you will most likely be during a zombie attack, such as a subway, mall, or amusement park. Personally, I prefer an AR over the M1 Carbine, mainly because I feel that scrounging for ammo will be easier to do for an AR. There will be plenty of abandoned 5.56 ammo left behind by decimated military and police forces. I feel that ammo and spare parts will therefore be much easier to acquire for an AR.

Remember though that ultimately your hardware will not get you out of a Zombie attack. Its really all about mindset. Stay alert. Remember the government routinely covers up Zombie attacks and labels them as other types of disasters. You have to take the initiative and remain prepared. You won't know the Zombies are coming until it is too late.

I have an RRA Car-15 right now, but i sometimes think back to when i had my Saiga .308 and it NEVER jamed. I think thats what i would want. My AR is super accurate BUT...it has malfed a couple times and thus lost my trust :(

February 21, 2009, 08:48 AM
I'd go with a shotty too, but can you reload fast enough? The Saiga shotguns work off an AK platform and use rifle-type magazines; I think these may be available in capacities of 20 rounds.

How much can you carry?

Not a winchester(:

Hey, the OP didn't ask about zombies. He asked about ZOMIES.

Keep you nightmarish monsters straight people.

M1A rifle; 1911 sidearm. Yeah, heavier ammo, but it's what I have. Maybe a Dead On Annihilator on my side too for melee.

This is such an easy question, really a "No Brainer"

According to "Harry" you would want a S&W mod.29, cause it's the most powerful hand gun in the world, and will "Blow your head clean off.

By the way I.B.T.L.

Now werewolves are another story.

As anyone who has seen "Dog Soldiers" knows, an FN FAL looks to be barely enough.

By the way, if you haven't seen it and you like the genre, modern werewolves, it's a must see. A group of Brit soldiers in the Scottish Highlands.... well, just see it and report back.

Zombies? :uhoh:

Long range maybe this:

And possibly this:

But probably this:

Diversity is also a good thing.

When I deal with groups of zombies, I like to use my M2, which is mounted on my Dodge 1500. My zombie hunting partner is a great driver and zombie's are not particularly fast. Therefore, it's the perfect zombie-slaying setup.

Because The High Road is about reality and responsible firearms ownership, not zombie fantasies.
