Speer Gold Dot SB 9mm

My local gun shop has just a few selections in 9mm for PD.
They have Corbon DPX for $39.95 per 20 or
Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel +p 124 grain for $19.29 per 20.

I will be shooting them from a G19 or P228.

Do you think the Speers will fit the bill or should I step up to the Corbons?

Speer Gold Dots are excellent ammo. Is the DPX superior, maybe. On a strictly analytical basis it is highly unlikely that one provides any significant advantage over the other, other than cost. At least with the Speer you can afford to test it in your guns to see that it feeds reliably and shoots where aimed.

The Gold Dot is excellent ammo, especially in +P. I don't really like your price options, either $1 or $2 a round. You could do what I just did and get a bunch of friends to go in on 1000 rounds of Gold Dot +P on Gunbroker for $300 and end up paying only 30 cents a round.

Or, you can buy Winchester JHP at Wallyworld in 50 round boxes for about $20 bucks.

That way you can afford to practice enough to hit what you shoot center-mass.

And if you hit COM, it will do as well as anything else.

That's too much to spend on SD ammo.

One of the most proven 9mm loads out there, very effective in real shootings.

Wowza! I could never pay 2 bucks a round for 9mm. I agree with RC, I am a big fan of the silver HP winchester stuff.

I was somewhat surprised by the "short barrel" ammo performance: http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/9mmluger.html I generally like Speer, and certainly think you could do worse, but there didn't seem to be any real benefit to the SB ammo in any of the calibers we tested.

As to how much is too much to pay for self defence ammunition, how much are YOU worth? I am quite priceless. Therefore, so is the ammunition I choose to defend my wonderful, irreplaceable self.

I just purchased a couple hundred rounds of the 9mm +P Short Barrel Gold Dots for my G26 and ran 100 through my G26 and 20 throug hmy G34 to check for function. The remaining 80 are to keep for defensive use: 21 for daily carry and the rest to refresh my carry gun every 6 months or so. Call me anal but I unload my carry ammo before I get to the range, mark the case that was chambered with a sharpie, and head out to the range with cheap FMJ's. When I get home, I load up again placing rounds that have been chambered at the bottom of the magazine so I don't chamber and eject the same rounds over and over. When I've chambered each round once or twice, I burn it up on my next range trip and replace it with fresh ammo.

They really seem hot compared to the 115 grain gold dots I've been running. Recoil was about what I would expect out of G27 or what I would expect a .357 Sig to feel like and very snappy. Not abusive or anything (it's still a 9mm) but was a lot more than I expected or was used to after running so much White Box 9mm. Don't regret going to them but would try a box before I stocked up on them.

As with any round you intend to use for defensive use in an autoloader, I'd run several rounds of it through any pistol you intend to rely on for defense to check for 100% reliable funcitoning. Shouldn't be a problem, especially in a Glock or Sig, but you want to KNOW your gun will feed them when you need it.

Paying $1 for the same Gold Dot ammo that can be had for 50 cents will not make you more safe. Nobody said you should buy cheap ammo, they are suggesting you shop a little smarter for your chosen round.
