1. Do you have to use the issued ammo in the Garand, Carbine, and Springfield matches?
2. Does a Krieger or Criterion barralled Garand really shoot that much better if no other mods are done?
Thanks.....

1. Yes

2.A little. I thought about this myself a while ago. Came to the conclusion " Why am I spending a couple hundred dollars on a barrel that is only going to give me a couple points toward a .79 cent medal?" I go to Perry to have fun. I have fun no matter how many medals I do or don't bring home. That is my yearly vacation, some people go to the beach, I go to Perry.
Didn't seem like a financially sound plan to me. I saved that money and blew it all onother stuff on vendors row and more practice ammo

Take a couple extra days and hit Cedar Point and its beach while you are there! Take wife with, let her beach and shop while you shoot....

As much as 50% of a Garand's accuracy comes from other stuff than the barrel. There is a lot of junk (Gas Cylinder, Op rod, upper handguard, lower handguard and the stock) hanging off the barrel that can affect accuracy if it is not hanging there the same way after each shot.
My DCM Garand shot 10" groups at 100 yds when I got it. I had it glass bedded and the front end unitized and kept the 1945 GI barrel. After the modifications, It shot 2" groups at that distance. My smith said those modifications and a Krieger or Criterian barrel would have bought me 1-1.5" groups. I'll buy one of those when this rig wears out. HTH

I put a Krieger on my 1903, it really improved the grouping, but the 1903 is fairly accurate with worn out barrels, so imagine one with actual rifling in the barrel.

They are getting strict with the ammo at Perry, in the last few years they have had a problem with the ammo the issued you not reaching the line, you know people using match ammo after getting the as issued. So they watch very close now and as far as the Garand scores, if you shoot over a certain score, a 285 I think, it is an automatic tear down to ensure the front wood has not been glued to the rear creating a float tube type configuration, people will try anything to win there.

The issued Greek shoots pretty good any ways for being Ball.

A shooting buddy of mine put one of the Criterion barrels on his M-1. I think my correct HRA with it's LMR barrel will still out shoot him.

The LMR's have always had an edge.

If your muzzle is hogged out -rebarrel. If it's not hogged out you should do OK unless your stock is so loose that the trigger guard closes almost by itself and your rear sight wiggles and your gas cylinder moves when you twist on it.

Bedded stocks aren't legal for the Garand match but they're OK for the high power, or has it changed?

I'm not too sure about the Criterian "By Kreiger". A Kreiger not a Criterion is worth the bucks if you're firing at the top of the game, but I see them going $400. $450. nowadays? Used to be $200. while a good Douglas was $140.

There is an article in the American Rifleman of the 60's. It describes the test squences, and results, the military conducted in determining what match modifications worked.

In that article is a comment about the quality of GI barrels. GI barrels they measured varied all over the place in terms bore and groove.

A good modern made barrel is going to be a better tube.

However that does not mean much if they have the rest of the barrel wrong. I purchased a Wilson match barrel. I installed it on a Garand. The rifle shot awful. Brass ejected with the same force as if it was a roller bolt action.

Gas port was able to accept a .076 diameter drill. Same drill was too big to fit into VAR gas port and a mint LMR barrel. My conclusion was that Wilson barrels had oversized gas ports.

Someone later posted that the correct gas port size is supposed to be 0795 to .0805 per print. My guess is that they did not measure the gas port on an actual barrel, because the drawing value is sure not reflected in the hardware.

I installed the VAR barrel on that action and it shoots about 1/3 to 1/2 the group size of the Wilson barrel.

Don't lie. You go so you can sneak out to Bass Island and "Put in Bay."

J/K.

Perry is an awesome time. Mecca for competitive gun nutz.

Have fun!

We usually take a day away from shooting after the team matches and held to one of the islands. I like kelly's as it seems less busy. We rent one of the 4 seat carts and hit all the winneries and micro breweries and end up at the docks for a late lunch before we head back.

3446, former Oak Harbor resident here... many fond memories of those islands and the whole area. Except for the winter.
