In a few weeks I'll be going to Branson, Missouri for a week between October 11th to the 18th in celebration of your passing reciprocal CCW. (okay, not entirely for that reason, but it certainly influenced my choice)

Are there any good ranges or gun stores in the area that I should be sure not to miss?

The bass pro shop is headquartered in Springfield. It's pretty cool.

Do me a favor if you do go to a gun place down there.

See if there is a Class III range or shop that opened up anywhere in that area. I knew a Class III dealer who was telling me about opening up a full-auto range in Branson. I've lost track of him, and can't find anything about that type of range down there.

From what I understand Branson is one of the most anti-gun places in the US.

I wonder if they put the "no guns" out yet?

Branson is very anti gun.

so that probably means no Class III establishment ever got going.

wouldn't that be great though? Full Auto range in the middle of an anti-gun tourist trap...

The only place I could recomend would be the bass pro shop, it's about a 35 minute drive north of Branson in Springfield.

Anyone have any specifics on why Branson is so anti?

Don't know the gun stores in Branson...BUT...

For Springfield:

Bass Pro sucks. It's nice to look at stuff, especially the high-dollar double rifles and shotguns in the little side room (check out the six-figure value double rifle under glass...neat), but it is not as good as it once was in terms of firearms.

Best gun store in the area, IMO, is Steve's on South Campbell. It's a little hard to find if you don't already know where it is, though. It's a little hole in the wall place that barely has standing room. Steve himself is a little hard to take if you aren't operating on his wavelength (and few people do) but he is basically a good guy with little tolerance for anyone's BS but his own (and there is plenty of it). Good prices and amazing inventory considering the (very) limited space. You can hunt and find lower prices online or in other stores, but not consistently. Steve's really is about the best gun store in existence, IMO, and I wish that it were closer. In addition, Steve is NOT a gunshop commando type but really knows his stuff (generally) and is not at all shy about sharing his prejudices. If you go, just remember to not take anything that happens there personally...
