@1400fps or a 265gr sp 44mag at 1200fps at a given range? i know this is a odd post..was reading alot on my "45-70 rounds" and they seem to lean not on speed but how many grains of lead they can send to the target..is big a fast the beast way to go? at what point do the speed and wt line cross?:uhoh:

For hunting loads in .44 Mag, I have always used the heavier bullets. Around here 200 yards and in is normal, with 100 and in more likely. Trajectory is not really a concern.

Go here:

and enter in your two loads.

Personal experience with big hogs makes me believe in the Taylor KO factor. My 45-70 put a couple down much faster than my 30-06.

I thus favor Elmer over Jack.

This gets into a Kinetic Energy versus Momentum as a measure of stopping power

Gunwriter shills like Kinetic Energy. Kinetic Energy (KE) is Mass times Velocity times Velocity.

Momentum (ME) is mass time velocity.

While KE is considered the "energy of movement", only ME is conserved in collusions. There is no conservation of KE.

So why do Gunwriters like KE?, primarily because they shill on differences. Because KE is dependant on the square of velocity, an increase of 10 feet in velocity increases KE by 100.

A shill can make that 10 fps difference a mile wide. And they have. They have created this entire mythical world in which cartridge effectiveness is dependant on, and compared to KE.

Momentum is a pain in the butt. The IPSC power factor was based on Momentum. 45 ACP shooters could easily major but 38 Super shooters created the phenomena of “Super face” when they blew their case heads trying to accelerate light bullets to the same momentum as a 230 45ACP. It takes a lot more work to increase ME than KE, and the associated recoil is unpleasant.

Living organisms do not respond in ways that exactly correlate with ME or KE. There are confounding factors such as bullet expansion or bullet tumbling that increase lethality, or decrease lethality. Still, since time immoral, the argument is not whether bigger is better, it is whether smaller is as good as big.

And nothing succeeds as well as shot placement.
