I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have a S&W Model 3 Frontier revolver 1880 that my grandfather gave me and I need to sell it because I've been laid off of work for awhile now and need to turn to my treasures to sell, I have a family to support. I've seen my gun on line which sold for $500 and another $2,800. I do have serial number if needed. I'm going to bring it to a dealer this week and just don't want to get ripped off. Any help I'd appreciate it. thanks!

Post some pictures and describe any numbers and marking on the gun, someone will be able to give you a good idea as to it's value. If you don't have to sell it absolutely right now, put it up for sale in the for sale section here. Even if you sell it for a fantastic deal here you'll probably get more than you will from a dealer.

Also try over at www.smith-wessonforum.com The hardcore smith & wesson collectors hang out there. They will be able to value it and also you may get an offer to buy.

I have photos I'm trying to upload but there is no "Pictures & Albums" link under control panel, help?
Also the serial numbers are on top of the barrel and give different dates when it was Pat'd. I need a magnifier, some are hard to read. Condition is good.

When replying use the advanced reply function and then use the attach files function to upload a picture from your computer.
The Standard Catalog of S&W lists the New model frontier values as follows:
Poor: $600
Fair: $750
Good $1250
Very Good $1800
Fine $3500
Excellent $6000
Excellent+ $9000
as New $12,500
I suggest you really should hold off selling it until you are sure of it's real value. A dealer will always give less than the retail - we have to make a profit when we resell it, so using an auction site or the buy and sell sections of a forum such as this may give you a much better deal.
I can understand the need to get in cash right here, right now if you are out of work and there is no food in the fridge (been there done that), so if you do have to sell it to a dealer then make sure you know the true retail value.

SASS will be your best bet for a quick sale.

Any chance you could sell it to a really good friend that has money that would hold it for you until you get back on your feet? I actually have a couple guns in my safe that I "bought" that way with the understanding that after a couple years, they give up thier rights to it. Sadly, I have never had someone come back for one, and, they were family guns, just like yours. I guess the sentimental attachment fades after awhile.

After reading all your comments, which I really appreciate it, I guess I'll hold off right now. I just applied for a job so I'll wait to see what happens there. I'll try posting photos too.
thanks to you all!
