My friend just bought a Taurus PT-24/7 Tactical and took the slide off to clean it. Put it back together, and now the dang slide stays about 1/4 inch open. Can't depress the trigger to get the slide off, now. So what's the easiest/safest way to fix this. I'm assuming the guide rod assembly is misaligned. Advice is appreciated.

my suggestion is if you don't want to break it or yourself take it to a gunsmith who is familier with the weapon.

If nothing else comes up, that's what i may wind up having to do. Any other ideas?

try the counter at the gun shop if you bought it there. that's usually free if they like. at worst, they'll charge you - but if they do, they'll definitely fix it at that point.

He may not know what is physically preventing the slide from closing fully, but does he know where he deviated from the reassembly directions? This may help him figure out what has gone wrong inside so he can fix it.

My guess is this...there is a little side note that appears after the 24/7 assembly directions: "The slide may stick on the frame before going fully to the rear, or the barrel may ride with it to the rear. Begin again and press down with the finger onto that rear portion of the barrel accessible through the ejection port."

Another way to accomplish the same thing is to insert the barrel in the slide while the slide is pointed nearly straight down...with the top of the barrel resting its weight on the inside of the top of the slide.

cratti, when I reassembled my PT-145 I did not get the take down pin back in correctly and the slide would not close. I'm thinking the 2 firearms are similar in this respect.

Here's what the manual says:

3. When reinstalling the SLIDE DISASSEMBLY LATCH or TAKEDOWN PIN, you must make sure that the barrel is fully forward in the slide so that when you insert the latch, with the lever pointing to the rear, the horizontal round part of the latch must be pushed through the frame and the mating portion of the bottom of the barrel. Once these parts have been lined up, and you gently push the latch in, a click will be heard indicating that the latch pin is secured in place.

4. The SLIDE CATCH ten can be depressed which allows the SLIDE to go forward.

I hope this helps. Been there. Done that.

The barrel is in okay, I can get the takedown pin all the way in (I AM familiar with this weapon; I've got the PRO-DS) which is why I suspect the problem is with the guide rod. I could be mistaken. Appreciate the suggestions.

Update - Got the slide to close, but a spring came out of the opening where the small red cocking indicator would usually be. That said, I am not attempting anything more with this thing and just returning it to the shop for him.
