Powder Charge Variation on Match Ammo

I just had a VERY interesting conversation with an employee of a name brand reloading machine company.

I own one of these machines and called up to see if the accuracy of the Thrower Bar could be improved. I am getting between a .3 to .5 grain variation shot to shot. The employee said this was within the accuracy the unit was marketed at. OK... I did not have a problem with this. I used the machine for many years for pistol only and didn't worry too much about accuracy until I recently began loading rifle.

What was interesting was the next statement that this man made. He said that the small variation would not make a difference in my rifle (PTR91). He went on to say that even Federal Match grade ammo has a 3.0 to 5.0 GRAIN (not tenth of a grain) variation on power charge from cartridge to cartridge. He asserted that he personally pulled down a box of Federal Match ammo and this was in fact his finding. :what:

Can anyone affirmatively confirm or dispel this assertion???

Total BS!

They very well might have 0.3 to 0.5 grain variation, although even that is very unlikely on Federal Match ammo.

There is No Way they have 3 - 5 grains differance.

In my 308 load with Varget, each 0.1gr is approx 10 fps. If there's variation of +/- 0.3gr, that's a minimum spread of 60 fps to start. That's terrible. I load to the closest 0.1gr.

Total BS!

I'd have to agree as well. Perhaps there was major misunderstanding or miscommunication. Something don't smell right.

It's got to be a mis understanding. I repeated what the guy said to me and he confirmed it just the way I wrote it in the OP.

My reaction was the same as you guys... No F&^$% Way !

Well, maybe it was Crack Day at work... Let's stop wasting bandwidth on this one...
