Gun forums

February 25, 2009, 08:06 PM
How many gun forums are out there? I am looking for one with quality/knowledgeable people like on THR but without the fascist editing like on THR I don't want a site where everyone swears every other word either!

Am I being too picky or is there a gun site that meets my need?

Thanks for any help.

These forums are kind of heavy on the moderating but I find it useful. Ive been on here for a few days, ought to put down internet and go to the range.... LOL.

But seperating the chaff from wheat has been good with these forums.

You can't complain about the mods in an open forum.

This won't last long:D

February 25, 2009, 08:17 PM
seriously, anyone know of a good good gun forum?

February 25, 2009, 08:17 PM is a good one.

Ellensburg, WA...that made me laugh out loud...I was at the Flying J truckstop way out there 2 years ago while my wife was back here in TN giving birth to our son.

In all my years as a truck driver...I NEVER felt further away from home than that night. It took me 8 days to get home, I had to deliver my load in Lynden, WA then go down to Seattle to get loaded back towards home...then, I hit some pretty bad weather...I-80 was closed all the way across Wyoming for 2 days...what a trip :(...but I finally made it home.

You might want to try:

You can also narrow it down based on what aspect of gun hardware you're interested in - black rifles ( - practical competition ( - 1911s ( or rimfires ( )

After spending some time on the wilder forums, you may quickly find out you prefer the 'fasist editing' since it really does reduce the noise to sift though.

I wish you guys would make up your mind. Last week I was accused of being a Nazi. This week I'm accused of being a fascist.

No doubt someone will be along shortly accusing me of being a right wing reactionary. Shortly thereafter I'll receive a PM from someone complaining about how I'm a Communist liberal.

Really, if you don't like THR as a forum, all you have to do is stop posting and move on to a place that's more in tune with what you want in a bulletin board. There's certainly no need for insults or acting the part of a drama queen.

February 25, 2009, 08:27 PM
nazis are fascists

February 25, 2009, 08:28 PM
So that's where Shawnee went (the other THR)...I don't blame him, this one has gone downhill lately.

February 25, 2009, 09:05 PM
I thought Thursday was Moderator complaint day.

Did I miss the memo or something?

THR is running the same way it always has. Every forum worth its salt has some level of moderation. The reason THR has become so successful is because its been kept focused, with clean language and polite behavior. And with the recent huge growth in gun sales, more people than ever before are frequenting all the forums out there.

Other forums exist. Some are very successful also. But as has been pointed out:

After spending some time on the wilder forums, you may quickly find out you prefer the 'fasist editing' since it really does reduce the noise to sift though.

February 25, 2009, 09:08 PM
I thought that was the first thursday of each month.

February 25, 2009, 09:35 PM
No, the first thursday of each month is praise the mods day.
They are fair game the other three:D

For the disatisfied - try -

There are all kinds of forums out there, Some are a pleasure to visit, and others aren't all that great. I have noticed that those that have resident authorities (aka "experts") tend to be the ones that have stricter moderators.

The high Road is known for being a great source of good information on about any firearms subject you can think of. Some of those who others depend on are present or past professionals in they're fields. What others have paid for High Road members can get for free. If you can find better, go to it! ;)

February 25, 2009, 10:01 PM
Pretty low class asking about other forums to go to on the very forum you're complaining about.

Starting an open discussion about why threads get closed and offering reasonable arguments about modifying the current approach might go further to satisfying your wishes.

There aren't very many broad firearms forums that have as their vision a civil, mature place that is family friendly. Most are full of chest beating Walter Mittys posturing. With profanity.

Try thefiringline or wethearmed, just don't be surprised if you get banned there instead of "over-moderated".

Wow, Javelin. Nice list!

February 25, 2009, 11:07 PM
Ive been a member of several forums and I must say THR beats them all hands down , yes sometimes a thread can get closed down for going off topic or to prevent over flaming but deal with it , thats what keeps it High Road , Arts Grammaw keeps her beady eye here for a good reason , we are open for the world to see and I for one like to be seen as a responsible respectable member of the shooting community , if I get out of line I expect a cuff round the ear and I take it like a man and try to do better next time .
Thank you THR mods .

February 25, 2009, 11:08 PM
Some of these internet commandos are closer to special ed than special forces.

Now that's funny! And sometimes TRUE!

I spend most of my THR time on the shotgun section. I have to say that the information, opinions, moderators, etc are top notch. I don't always agree with an opinion, but that isn't a requirement! Being civil and open to differing opinions is what decent folks with any common sense would want. I don't want to have to read all the personal insults, flaming, or whatever you want to call it to get to the part about the firearm. Thanks THR!

The biggest thing a new member of any forum can do to be happy there is to spend a couple of days reading the posts and getting a feel for how things are done there before jumping in and then getting your feelings hurt when your thread is closed, your post deleted or you get a warning from one of the staff.

Every online community has it's own culture. Get to know that culture before you barge in and get your fingers slapped with the moderator's electronic ruler is just the smart thing to do. If you do that, you may find that the forum isn't the place you want to hang out online at before you become involved.

It is impossible to maintain any kind of focus in a forum with a membership this large without the moderation that happens. None of us takes any pleasure in closing threads, deleting posts or banning members. All of us would be very happy if everyone just obeyed the rules, read the sticky threads at the top of each forum and posted on topic thoughts.

Without the moderation THR would be just like, Glocktalk or any number of other forums where you have to read through pages of BS to find the good information that is there.

We take our mission of being a promoting responsible firearms ownership very seriously here.

February 25, 2009, 11:33 PM
Well, I've been around here since THR spun off TFL. This place is like anywhere that human critters collect. You get the good with the bad and the bitter with the sweet. Although....

If one contributes or questions with a bit of calm reason or levity one can pass some time and get some giggles, snorts, interesting badinage and even some fine information.

As for the moderators, I wouldn't want their job. They seem to me to be a pretty fair minded sort and have caused me, on occasion, to snort a large swallow of expensive booze through my nose.:D:D So my only complaint, i guess, is the loss of that prime amber liquid.

I have also come to have met, though not in person yet, a fairly substantial number of honorable men and women that I call friends. Moderators and administrators are included in that group.

Life is all about choices. One choice is to find your internet bulletin board/chatroom ambiance elsewhere...Or join in and enjoy probably the best firearm site on the innertube. The rules of conduct are posted for all to see.

I kind of agree with the O.P. (Nazi is kind of harsh, maybe stalinistic or Maoist with a hint of imperialism.)

I say, "Hail to our moderator overlords."

They are only not locking this one to show how open they are to criticism. :what: Plus there is always the .us site!!!

anarcho-fascism here.

They are only not locking this one to show how open they are to criticism. Plus there is always the .us site!!!

Bull puckey. We're not locking it for two reasons. The first reason is that it is posted to the correct sub-forum on this site for such topics. The second is that it is civil to this point.

Oh, my, yes... the .us site where one can watch threads with no new posts for days and days. How utterly fascinating.

Guys, we've tried most of the things people ask about. Not locking threads. Legal & Political forum. SHTF topics allowed. Zombies too. Off-topic forums.

And then, after trying them; we looked at the results. After comparing the results with what THR is, should be, and will remain...we decided we could do without such. Now, if you must have such, we hope you find it and wish you the best of luck in the future.

February 26, 2009, 12:27 AM
Look, if you have a specific complaint, spell it out. Provide examples and an explanation of why you don't agree with what was done. Tell everyone who the Mods were that you PMed about it and what the conclusion of the discussion was. Offer alternatives and constructive criticism that might result in change.

Or throw stones.

It seems to me that Javelin posted the solution that colemanw ask for:

I am looking for one (forum) with quality/knowledgeable people like on THR but without the fascist editing like on THR I don't want a site where everyone swears every other word either!

Since this forum doesn't meet his expectations surely there must be one in post #15 that does.

To me, the language and comments in the O.P. are deliberately provocative, and intended to place our moderators on the defensive. In truth there is no reason for them to be defensive at all. If one doesn’t like a tightly run ship the whole of cyberspace lies before them. Go forth and seek Utopia, and God speed you in your quest… ;)

Notes to self:

1. Make sure I have Dr. Pepper and junk food on Wednesday to read Mod bashing threads on Thursday.

2. Suggest THR buy Pizza and Dr. Pepper for members , so members can read Mod Bashing threads on Thursday.

Folks, some of the Staff around here have been doing Gun Forums since the days one attached tin cans with string to a manual typewriter to access the 'Net.
Meaning, some have a pretty good idea of how to run things.

Personally, not only as a member of THR, also elsewhere, including having been Staff, and currently am a Mod...

Some members just don't get "it" and bounce through Gun Forums like a pinball and end up not racking up any points, instead being banned. ain't the forum that needs to change, instead the only thing a person can change, which is themselves.

The more I read my note to self, the better Number 2 looks. *grin*

Mommy, I want THR. Only not. What should I do? :D

February 26, 2009, 06:43 AM
Pizza and Dr. Pepper at 5 Am? OK
I am in!

Seriously, time for some of you to make a decision and get on with your life. Either way good luck!

February 26, 2009, 11:48 AM
Last week I was accused of being a Nazi
Na Justin your are not a Nazi, maybe a Crypto-Nazi, but not a real Nazi...(READ SARCASTIC)

The mods get paid what again, oh yeah that's right in bile and venom for all the work they do around here. They spend their free time policing one of the Internets largest and most complete firearms forums. The rules are simple, play by the rules or leave. If the rules are too tough for you then I guess... bye.

February 26, 2009, 11:50 AM
aren't all forums run by fascist/Nazi moderators?

you'd think some would be run by commie moderators. commies are much worse than nazis or fascists.

February 26, 2009, 12:00 PM
nazis are fascists

Just how loud was that whizzing sound above you?

Most whines don't get Gouda or Camembert as accompaniment, although I commonly think that plain old rat cheese would be appropriate...

February 26, 2009, 02:17 PM
Hmm, Nazi...

Isn't that German for National Socialism? Nationalsozialistische?

Sorry, Italy was Facist group.

Seriously, why am I not seeing the mods as over-controlling?

February 26, 2009, 02:23 PM
Javelin, just so you know, is no more and is now so you can update your list. :) nice list BTW. Anyone else interested, it is civil there like here, just smaller. I'm sticking around, I like it here. :D

February 26, 2009, 02:41 PM
Like where is my pizza and Dr. Pepper?

<checks calendar>

This is Thursday, Thursday is bash mod day...

I was sorta hoping to have my pizza and Dr. Pepper by noon, but if THR Staff decided on pizza and Dr. Pepper for supper, I can do that.

(THR Staff probably figured supper would be better, so one could read bashing posts accumulated throughout the day)

Upon reflection, it's philosophically impossible for me to be a Nazi or a Fascist. I've been an entrepreneurial capitalist since back in the 1960s.

Look at it this way: There's crime against property, such as vandalism or burglary. There's crime against person, such as assault or murder. But I have great difficulty with the idea of crime against government. Traffic laws come to mind. Creative interpretation of IRS deductions is another. So how can I be fascistic? Or Nazi-like? Can't happen. Sorry. Try again.
