View Full Version : Round count? Really!!

Ok now tell the truth on this one!

How many rounds do you have out of your shooters? I was particularly interested if you have a Taurus pt145, but I didn't want to limit the question.

I have SA 1911 with 700 rounds through no problems.

My Taurus pt145, going on 300. (3rd generation, again please let me know if you have this one).

Shotgun, Mossberg 500 with 1200 rounds through no problem. Got me a bunch of birds this year with an 18.5 inch barrel!

Well, what do we have?

50 for Rem 870 Marine Magnum 12 Ga, torn down and rebuilt like new by Smith.

50 for Moss 500 Bantam, also torn down and rebuilt like new by Smith.

Reason for tear down and rebuild is my bi annual firearms maintaince policy in my home in addition to cleaning after every range visit or use, no exceptions. Said cleaning after range is done by me. And it accumulates so Smith takes it all out a few months later.

10 for the M&P .45 ACP which will probably be over 50 very soon. It's fun and cheaper to shoot than the big boys.

C2 Taser Two spark tests so far totaling about 40 seconds.

There, that is my count. Pretty noobie new huh?

My IPSC Glock 35 has well over 5000 since I got it 2 or 3 years ago. And the Model1Sales AR-15 has about 6000 rounds through it with only 1 broken extractor pin.

My higest round count would be my HP. I shoot it about twice a month usually with my father in law who dosen't own a any guns and just likes shooting mine. Each time out about four 50 round boxes. So that would mean about 400 rounds a month. So that would be about 4800 a year. I have alot of other handguns but that the highest one, expecially since it will eat just about anything ;)

Truth be known, I lost track many moons ago for most my firearms except those with very few arounds put through them. I do estimate for the majority of my firearms and I'm sure the figures are somewhat accurate being that I base them off my reloading supplies.

My duty Glock 22 has a few thousand through it easily and is only about a year and a half old. Free ammo is awesome!

My Walther P22 had a few thousand rounds through it during the few years I had it.

Those are my only pistols with high round counts through them. But my Marlin Model 60 has probably had many thousands of rounds through it. I finally just got it back, so its got any thousands comming up.

Getting pretty close to 4000 in my hi point 9mm. That's the more than any of my other guns. Mostly because anytime I take my brothers shooting I just hand it over and a couple of bulk boxes of ammo. I never seem to get any back. I probably have close to that in my Glock 20 as that's my favorite to shoot.

I got a new PM9 this past Sunday and have 300 through it already. Why buy guns if you aren't going to shoot them?:)

Here are some of my higher-count firearms:

1. Ruger 10/22, purchased 2003 - 3,000+
2. WASR GP-10, purchased 2005 - ~1,800
3. Glock 19, purchased 2006 - ~1,300
4. Kel-Tec Sub2000 (used) - ~600
5. CZ-75 SP-01 w/ .22lr Kadet Kit - ~600
6. CZ-75 SP-01 9mm - ~600

...And everything else could be considered "safe queens" with less than 600 or so...

Hungry Seagull - I don't understand your post. Why are you tearing down and rebuilding firearms every 50 rounds? Were you talking in hundreds or thousands? What does this mean: And it accumulates so Smith takes it all out a few months later. ?

I'd only have the foggiest idea when it comes to competition guns.

SA 1911 - over 20,000

S&W 629 - about 5,000

As for the rest ... no idea, especially as I'm at least the second owner of most of them.

I can shoot as much as 200 plus round per gun when I go to the range.

Smith & Wesson Sigma 9VE with exactly 530 rounds down the pipe.

No FTE/FTF's... despite the lack of love for the Sigma's, I really dig mine... been 100% reliable and goes bang every time I have asked it to, what more could I ask for???

Too many guns, too many range trips, too many hunting trips, over too many years to have any idea of how many rounds went through what......I have no idea, nor do I really care. A lot of rounds through a lot of guns, that is for certain. I keep them clean as required, inspect and repair as required, and shoot the heck out of them....the last part is always required! :)
Heck, I usually put a brick of .22's through my BuckMark, Ruger MkI, Beretta 21A, or such after work once a week just to unwind...in addition to a few boxes through whatever centerfire guns I take with me.

BTW: I am also very curious why the need to have a gunsmith regularly rebuild a gun after only 50 rounds. At that low of shot count, it hasn't started to be broken-in yet.

I have close to 50,000 rounds through my Kimber Classic (MK I). I typically load and shoot 5,000 rounds a year -- using a full 5,000 round pack of primers.

I have over 250,000 through my Kimber M82 in .22 LR

I don't keep accurate count either, but 1k+ through my Neos, same through my Henry H001. I've put 200 or so through my Mosin M44(who knows how many before me, though).
I've got a Colt Police Positive I've only put 100 through(got it a short time ago), but it's from 1928 and I'm certainly not the first owner! Just picked up a New Vaquero in .45 Colt last Saturday, I've only put 44 rounds through that so far, but I'm second owner there. My C&B revolver and caplock muzzloader have more than a few, but not many...yet.

As for Hungry Seagull...50 rounds isn't even enough to call it dirty yet, unless you're shooting BP loads through like I do through the New Vaquero. :)

Mr Jackstinson,

I had an oppertunity to have the gunsmith install rails onto both shotgun recievers. While they guns were in there was a chance to clean and check them.

I made the decision when one shell failed to eject properly and hung halfway out of the port on the 870. And another time when the same gun had a shell sort of hung onto the back plate where the pin was refusing to go boom.

The other gun had too much weight becuase of my own modifications and the gunsmith had the ability to do the job correctly with the right mounts without the weight issue. And why not have that gun cleaned too?

There is one thing that is hammered into my head Clean it in the morning, shoot in the day, clean it again before bed and have it ready all the night.

A clean gun is a safe gun. A gunsmith that does the work for me is a very good one and I wish to maintain the guns in as near perfect like new condition. Someday... they may hold thier value.

It's lind of like cleaning the windows, polishing the wheels, removing unfinished paperwork, storing everything in thier places in the cab and pulling maintaince and laundry duty before the dispatcher calls with a load. It might be 7 days before I can stop and do this again in peace.

Call it a habit, and maybe a expensive one on my part. But it all comes out of our gun budget each month so.... why not?

I wish I can say the same for my home. A neat freak Im not.

The truth huh? Well i've easily got 12,000,000+ rounds through my .50 cal, sub-MOA AR. Had to beat an elephant to death when I ran out of ammo.

But seriously though, I have a PT-111 and it's got about 500 round with no problems. I've also got a Maverick 88 (basically a Moss 500) and its got about 1000-ish with no problems.

I keep records of all my guns in a journal book (used to be a $0.99 composition book, but I've upgraded to leatherbound). In it, I keep records of everything that I've ever done to each firearm from expenses of upgrading, modifications, servicing and of course round count including what kind of ammo.

It is not too difficult if you keep it with your firearms, and can really help when your collection grows beyond 'only a few'.

My highest count guns are my M1911s, the highest round count is about 10K.
Next are my .22lr pistols, but these are only at 4-5K.

close to 30,000 rounds through them. My Marlin lever action probably has close to the same. I couldn't come close to telling you how many my assorted rifles and pistols have had down the tubes so lets start with only the new ones.

Ruger LCP have owned it only a few months and been to the range with it twice. 600 rounds approximately.

Taurus PT-1911 that I have owned for one week. 300 rounds. Loading for it right now.

Glock that I carry daily has had more than 3000 rounds through it since the last time I cleaned it. Probably close to 10,000 rounds through it.

My other Glock is about the same as the first.

My first Glock 17 had over 50,000 through it by me, I bought it used from another competitive shooter and sold it to a competitive shooter. My current Glock 17 has over 10,000 rds through it since July of 2008. I shoot 1500-2000 rounds per month between practice and matches. Just since last Saturday I have put 700 rounds through my G17.
One of my Glock 22's has 35,000 rounds through it- after it was purchased from a police buy back.
I have a 10/22 that has to have over 100,000 rounds through it easily. I have had it for 20+ years and it gets shot a alot.

I don't keep track. Don't care enough about round count other than how many are left in the gun when I'm shooting.
for me it is a way to keep up with when i need to replace parts, ie recoil springs, firing pin springs, mag springs etc, which are very important to the proper function of your handguns, and long guns. wait to long to change recoil springs and you could have issues, ie not cycling correctly, don't change the firing pin springs and you can have light primer strikes. mag springs, faliures to feed etc. round counts are really important for 1911's, when to change extractors, etc.

also if there is an issue with a gun i want to know exactly how long it went before it went down. and why.

I have the Taurus PT-145 MilPro (3rd Gen) as my daily carry. I got it maybe 3-4 months ago. Round figures (no pun intended) it's probably had 600 rounds through it. Blazer brass, WWW ball, Speer 185 gr HPs, Federal 230 gr HSTs & Hydra-Shoks.
Although you didn't ask, FWIW it has never failed. No FTF, FTE, stovepipes, nada. That's why it's my every day.

Glock 19C purchased May 2008, 6100! ZERO malfunctions.

FN Five-Seven USG. Purchased August 08-1100. Again, Zero issues.

Colt 1991 NRM .45 purchased used(1000-1500 rounds on it from previous owner) December 08- I put 825 through it. No issues.

Colt Special Combat GVT hard chrome .45. 1.20.09(LOL, you know what date that is don't you!) Had 300-400 through it from the previous owner. I've put through 425. No problems.

Taurus PT-1911 SS. Bought it in October 08, 1175 rds through it. I think it's my lightest recoil 1911.

I have others(Sp101, and a russian makarov) but I do not keep track of those.

Ive had 15k or so through my 10/22. Still have yet to have a problem other than dud rounds and fail to feeds from cheap mags (ram-lines dont work for me).

Being a handgun forum though. I have a S&W 5906 and ive put 300 rounds through it, but don't now actually round count as I bought it used. Only fail to feed ive ever had was with a unmarked mag I bought at a gunshow (last time I do that). Cant say enough good things about this gun in one lifetime. Just a real keeper.

My PT145 is my favorite gun purely for it's reliability. Round count is a least 2500 and it keeps gobbling ammo like a teenager does food.

I've run about every flavor of ammo possible and it happily digests it all. XTP, hydrashoks, silvertips, SWC, RNFP, DoubleTap heavies to cowboy load low recoiling stuff too. I did go a bit low on some SWC cowboy loads and have a problem with stovepiping on that batch of rounds. If loading for low recoil, stay in the 60+% range for reliable cycling. The same can be said for my wife's PT 9mm model. Same year, slimmer grip, same willingness to eat like a teen.

I know Taurus can have a bad rap, but these two guns I have are just wonderful for my family.

I've got an old 22 that I don't shoot anymore. Seems between my granfather, my dad and myself we put enough rounds through the barrel to turn it into a smoothbore.:what: The wrist and the forearm where you hold it are actually a darker finish from the body oils soaking in over the years. Hows that?

As far as functional guns, my fist sp101 is coming up on the 100,000 round mark. Wore out two sets of the rubber houge mono-grips so far, the third set is starting to show the nylon frame near the heel and the pebbled texture is pretty much smooth.

I use an excel spreadsheet instead of a notebook. I like it because you can sort the info into useful groupings, and it does the addition for you :)

Without even knowing why I was doing it, I started keeping track of rounds fired, type of ammo, target distance, etc. about a month after I started shooting. I noticed everyone on THR seemed to keep detailed records. I figured there must be a good reason why everyone did it, so maybe I should do it, too.

my round counts:
ruger 22/45 MKIII - 2590. Purchased new, so this is actual count, not an estimate
colt huntsman - 700 by me. No idea of how many in the 40 years before I got it.
S&W 10-5 - 24 by me. Guestimating 500 total including previous owners.
S&W 19-3 - 100 by me. No idea of before me except to say that, judging by looks, "lots and lots" probably isn't an understatement

Updating your records and cleaning you guns after a range session are just part of gun aftplay.
