My friend has what I belive to be a 1920 commercial Luger in 30 cal luger.
Now here is the problem , it has no markings other than DWM on the toggle, made in Germany on the right side of the frame near the barrel ,and gesichert near the safety.
The barrel dose not look like itt is big enough for a 9mm so I think it is a 30 luger.
I got him a box of Winchester super X that are bottle necked and need o make sure they are the right ones.
A round will feed but I'm still worried about case failure.
If any has one or knows how to tell for sure "safely" pleas let me know. Thank you.

If it is marked 7.65mm then it's a .30 Luger. If not, the simplest way to check and see if it's in 9mm or .30 Luger is to take a 9mm round and see if the bullet will fit most of the way into the muzzle. If it's a .30 then it won't fit in very far at all.

it's a .30 luger , most commercial Lugers imported back then were .30 luger
[7,65 luger] I just tried putting a 9mm ball round in the chamber and it only
goes about 3/4 of the way in the chamber.

Try the Luger Forum. (http://www.lugerforum.com/) They can answer just about any Luger question you can ask.

1. If a .38 cleaning brush fits easily into the bore it's 9mm.

2. If the loaded 7.65 round fits in the muzzle it's 9mm

3. Field strip it and look down the barrel from the breech. On the 7.65 you can see the shoulder in the chamber.

Measure the barrel. Should be appx 3 7/8"

Most likely 30 Luger. Think Winchester still loads it. Nice load but no stopper. REALLY fun to shoot at distances. BANGWHAP......fassst.

Almost no recoil. You can't chamber a 9mm in a 30.

Germany was forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles to build any more 9mm or barrels over 4"

They stamped "Made in Germany" or "Germany" in various locations on different guns.
