View Full Version : Short barrel double for HD??? Cut or buy?

So I've been considering a coach gun for HD and I don't see many offerings. Actually some very cheap ones mostly for Cowboy Action or fun. (I could be wrong)

Anyway, I see some older 28" doubles for good prices and I thought, maybe I could just cut them down. Isn't that what people used to do anyway? Get a good strong savage double and cut the barrels down?

Anythoughts?

I have thought about doing that and every time I get the money I end up buying something else. As long as its a good action your golden, and longer doubles can be had for a lot cheaper than shorties (in my neck of the woods anyways). Buy one that can shoot both barrels at once if you want serious firepower.

+1 I was thinking of doing the same thing...

Are 18.5" barreled doubles all that much more effective than 18.5" barreled pump guns holding 3 times the number of shells?

I mean, I know that you really don't have to AIM a double-barreled gun the way you do a pump -- as long as you've got it more or less pointed in the right direction, that bad guy is D-R-T.

And I know that the sound of the "CLICK" as the breech snaps shut on a double causes bad guys to soil their drawers, pee on themselves, or go into cardiac arrest 73.8% more often than the "cha-chunk" of racking a pump gun.

And I know that a lot of fine old sporting doubles can be had for WAAAY less money than a $200 Mossy 500 or $150 Rem 870 police trade in pump. Not to mention the exquisite feeling of that hacksaw blade shredding through the bluing on that fine old gun....

Wait, what was the question?

not true

besides, why would you want to give away your position??

Once the barrels are cut, you have NO choke at all.....the legal minimum is 18"....and unless you're willing to entangle the wrath of the BATF, 18.5 is the minimum

and if you can do that, please PM me with all of those contacts....neer seen that yet

+1 Sam

The only advantage I see for a break action HD gun is for someone (like my Dad) who isn't a "gunnie", and needs something SIMPLE that he can't short-stroke, can't jam, can't forget about the safety, etc. load-point-pull-repeat

Hey oneounceload,

I'm sorry, my entire post was a joke. All of it was mild ribbing through turning some of the classic "truisms" on their heads to make my point that, if you're going to spend money and effort on a new home-defense shotgun, cutting down a side-by-side is hard to justify.

Seriously, you thought that I believe that you don't have to aim a double-barrel? :what: Give me SOME credit! :D Heck you even believed the statistic I made up about how often bad guys lose bowel control! That's AWESOME!

Sam - you are now officially off of my christmas list.

Anyway, this thread is not to debate double vs pump vs granade launcher.
Also, not every older gun is a classic. Some are just older guns.

Buy. Stoeger makes good new ones in 12 and 20, so do several other makers.

Any older SXS in solid enough shape to depend on for a house gun is too good to cut down.

I have handled both the stoeger and the remington spartan. I really liked the spartan. It felt a little more refined than the stoeger. With the remington you also recieve a set of chokes, making it into a more versitile shotgun.

Personally I would rather have a cutdown Stevens 311 than a Stoeger and I don't see anything at all wrong with cutting one. Please don't cut off any L.C. Smith's or Parkers though ...........

I have a cold heart ... because the thought of hacking down an old double-barrel makes me kind of want to cry?

(And because I can do math.... 2 shots < 6 shots, $150-$200 is less than the cost of an old SxS?)

Don't be offended! I was making a point with a little mild humor. Not trying to spread animosity.

Cut away guys!
