Found this at the range today. So far nobody I've talked to has been able to identify it. At first glance it looks like a .223 with the shoulder moved down the case, but on inspecting the bottom there is sort of a recessed ring around the primer. There are no markings on the case at all.

I am attaching pictures of the case.

Do you have any dimensions? Rim diameter, head diameter, case length, neck diameter etc. would help. It may be some special 5.56 military case, may be something really wild. I've never seen a case with that relief? groove.

Almost looks like a berdan primed case from the way the head is.

Might be a .222 Remington Mag case judging from the length of the neck.

The case mouth is the same diameter as a .223. it is slightly shorter than a .223 round and the length from the case mouth to the start of the case shoulder is about 75% longer than the same part on a .223. The oddest thing is the recessed ring around the primer. Also, it seems to use a boxer primer, one flash hole.

It's a .222 Remington. The .222 Mag. is slightly longer than the .223.
The ring around the primer is usually seen European mfg'd ammo. It (ring) prevents bullet nose from contacting primer of leading rounds in tubular magazines.
A strange one you have there !!

Or...

It could be a European manufacture 5.62 x 45. The reccesed ring is common on military rounds there.

More of it coming in country now for the newer Russian AK's.

That AIN'T a .222 Remington....

I can't tell you exactly what it is, but the proportions just aren't right for a .222.

5.45x39? The AK-74 service round? They're slightly shorter than .222,IIRC, and have a bit more taper. I've only seen it in steel case ammo. Should hold a .221 bullet and have a 39mm long case-6mm shorter than the .223.
